IOM resumes name verification in South Darfur camp

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) will resume the process of verifying the names of newly displaced in El Salam camp, near South Darfur’s capital Nyala, after a stop of two-weeks. The revision of the registration of the newly displaced was suspended after six El Salam camp residents were abducted by militiamen. They have not been released so far. Sheikh Mahjoub Adam Tabaldiya of El Salam camp told Radio Dabanga that the IOM has verified the names of about 3,000 out of 6,387 newly displaced. He urged the organisation to speed up the revision so that the newly displaced will be able to obtain food rations. Radio Dabanga reported on 7 May that the newly displaced at El Salam camp staged a demonstration that day against what they called “the manipulation and procrastination of their registration by the Sudanese Humanitarian Commission”. By 7 May, the newly displaced had officially registered their names four times within two months. First, the registration process was done by a committee consisting of HAC, UNHCR and the IOM. The second time, the details of the new.y displaced were registered by HAC and the camp elders, the third time by a HAC team, and the fourth registration was done by a South Darfur State HAC committee. The IOM would start on 19 May again with the re-registration and verification of the newly displaced. It would be able to verify 25 names a day. At the end of February and early March, more than 100 villages southeast of South Darfur’s capital Nyala were attacked by elements of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The villages were razed to the ground, causing the displacement of tens of thousands of people.
