A group of armed herders raped five young women for some six hours in Tawila locality on Friday.

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, a relative of one of the victims said that the women were collecting straw in the area of Um Bejee, 15 km north of Shangil Tobaya, when the herders attacked them.

“At about 8 am, the herders seized the women at gunpoint, and took them to one of the valleys nearby, where they repeatedly raped them. They only released them after Friday prayers.”

She added that the incident was reported to the police of Shangil Tobaya and Unamid. “Yet no action was undertaken to help the victims or persecute the perpetrators”.
