Fear after youths ‘eject’ militiamen from Zalingei camp, Central Darfur

Youths from camp Khamsa Degaig of Zalingei, Central Darfur, ejected armed militiamen affiliated to Border Guards and Central Reserve Forces (known as Abu Tira) from the camp on Sunday, following an incident involving a displaced man. Initially, “an unknown group” attacked Abdullah Haroun in his home. He was beaten and thrown into a dumpster, an activist from the camp told Radio Dabanga. The Sheikhs began a search for the culprits, which led to the home of another resident and his two sons. They were arrested and handed over to the police. Shortly afterwards, the armed militiamen stormed the camp “in reaction to the problem”. According to sources, Haroun has “tribal connections” to some of the Abu Tira militiamen. The raid prompted the youth of the camp to “confront the militiamen and expel them”. The activist said that the threat of attacks from militiamen outside the camp is causing the population to live in a state of constant fear.
