Detained Khartoum spokesman ‘threatened with death’

The spokesman for the residents of the El Jireif East neighbourhood in Khartoum, who was arrested on Monday when riot police and security agents dispersed a sit-in with tear gas, claims to have been beaten and assaulted by the security apparatus, while in detention together with 13 others.

Speaking in a video interview, spokesman Badruldin El Haj said that one of the security personnel threatened to kill him using a car or motorcycle.

On Sunday and Monday the residents of El Jireif East carried out a sit-in in protest against confiscation of their lands.

Last year the residents of El Jireif East went out in demonstration which was confronted by the security forces with live ammunition that resulted in the death of Ahmed Obeid Mohammed Hamad and wounded others.
