Demonstration against militia assaults in El Fasher, North Darfur

Residents of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, went to the streets in a mass demonstration on Sunday morning, in protest against ongoing assaults by militiamen and Border Guards. One of the demonstrators explained to Radio Dabanga that “the demonstrators protested against the ongoing assaults, killings, robberies, and thefts of government-backed militiamen, especially the Border Guards, often even under the eyes of the authorities.” He explained that elements of the Border Guards had tried to steal the vehicle of Abu Bakar Ismail Abbu in El Fasher at about 9pm on Saturday. When he opposed them, they shot him dead. In another incident on Saturday, Border Guards troops opened fire on three young men when they refused to hand over their money and mobile phones. They sustained varying injuries, and had to be transferred to El Fasher hospital for treatment.   The source added that the demonstration headed towards the North Darfur State government premises, where they halted, demanding from the authorities to put an end to the assaults and abuses of the “government-backed militiamen” and bring the offenders to justice.
