Darfuris infected with rabies ‘terrorise’ town

Residents of Shangil Tobay in North Darfur are “living in a state of terror” as individuals infected with rabies were reportedly “searching for prey to bite” at the town’s market, prompting many to flee.Reports reaching Radio Dabanga indicate that five people in the town of Fariq Selo Kandaro, 5km from Shangil Tobay, were infected with rabies after eating camel meat.The victims allegedly began “biting whoever they saw” and a woman began biting herself and tried attacking her husband who eventually had to kill her, sources claim.Three of the infected persons then moved to the Shangil Tobay market where, “after painstaking efforts”, the police managed to arrest them. Residents of Shangil Tobay and surrounding villages report being in panic. “People are avoiding each other fearing there might be more individuals infected with rabies.”File photo by Albert González Farran/Unamid
