The Justice and Equality Movement said that its forces had clashed Monday with government forces in the area between the Khazan Jadid and Shearia. That area is northeast of the state capital of Nyala. JEM commander Suleiman Sandal said in an interview that fighting is still going on. Radio Dabanga was unable to contact the armed forces or any independent source for comment on the news.
During the month of May, JEM several times reported clashes with the government. On 21 May, Suleiman Sandal said that JEM forces killed 200 soldiers in the area of Shearia and Daeen the two previous days. An army spokesman denied this. The rebel movement refuses to participate in peace negotiations hosted in Doha.
