Curfew in Nyala after police shoot demonstrators in South Darfur

The Governor of South Darfur, Adam Mahmoud Jar Al Nabi has imposed a curfew in state capital Nyala from 5pm on Thursday until 7am on Friday, and from 7pm on Friday until 7am on Saturday. The announcement is part of the ongoing State of Emergency in the city. As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, on Thursday morning a demonstration ended in a violent protest against the governor, with demonstrators setting fire to the government offices (see photo series and video link below). The police quelled the uprising firing live ammunition which killed five people and injured at least 48. Scores of youths were arrested. The protest began as citizens blamed the Governor for the lack of security leading to the killing on Wednesday of the chairman of the Nyala soccer team Al Merreikh, Ishmael Ibrahim Wadi, who is also a popular businessman. Two days earlier, a couple working in the hospital and prison were murdered by militiamen.
