The administration of Kober prison in Khartoum North has transferred Lt. Gen. Ibrahim El Maz, assistant to the head of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), to the Police Hospital in the Sudanese capital.

The wife of El Maz, Rasha Hamad, told Dabanga that last week his health deteriorated. “He suffered from heart and lung infections, and his body began to swell. On Saturday, he was taken to the hospital. He was returned to prison, despite his poor health.”

She said that on Sunday evening, he entered into a coma, after which he was taken to the intensive care unit of the Police Hospital.

In March 2012, El Maz and five others were sentenced to death, after they were captured in a battle between the Sudanese army and JEM fighters in Darfur the year before.

The Constitutional Court has not yet handled the appeal of the ruling.
