Conscripts torch military camp in East Darfur

Students conscripted for compulsory Sudanese National Service fled their training camp near to Ed Daein, the capital of East Darfur, after clashing with their instructors and setting the camp ablaze on Saturday.A student told Radio Dabanga that the recruits were provoked: “They were subjected to strenuous physical workouts as well as punitive physical exercise”.The Press Office of Khalid bin Waleed camp confirmed that a protest involving approximately 1,600 recruits erupted when five or six recruits were singled-out for punitive sanctions.According to a statement from the Office of the National Service Coordinator, the incident has been ‘solved’.“The recruits have been given leave until the end of this week. Two committees have been formed: one to investigate the protest incident, and another to investigate the authorities in the camp.”On visiting the camp to survey the damage, the Governor of East Darfur said that the state is willing to rebuild the camp.
