Arson suspected in Central Darfur’s Hassahissa camp

Several fires that broke out in the Hassahissa camp for the displaced, Zalingei locality in Central Darfur during the last three days destroyed the full contents of 16 homes and a large part of the camp’s mosque.  Speaking to Radio Dabanga, the coordinator of the Central Darfur camps reported that a fire that broke out on Saturday night at Block 8 in the south-eastern section of the camp, destroyed six shelters. A fire on Sunday night burned seven homes to ashes, and a third fire, on Monday, destroyed three houses, and damaged a large part of the camp’s mosque. “The affected families are now living in the open without shelter, food, or cover.” The coordinator suspected that the fires were caused by arson. He demanded from Unamid to “provide the necessary protection and put an end to these intentional violations against the displaced”. File photo by Albert González Farran/Unamid
