East Darfur citizens complain of deteriorating environmental health at Ed Daein hospital and lack of emergency medicines. Patients’ families are reportedly using hospital facilities for washing and cooking.

One of the citizens described Ed Daein Hospital as “a dumpster filled with dirt and filth”.

The caller told Radio Dabanga that “patients’ families are sleeping under trees, but cook and wash their clothes in the hospital”.

In an earlier press statement, the medical director of the hospital, Dr Badruldin Abdenabi El Daoul Bait, acknowledged the deterioration of services in the hospital wards and attributed this to a lack of government care.

However, the East Darfur state Health Minister said “the situation has improved a lot at the hospital… there is electricity in the hospital for 24 hours a day, ten specialists instead of four, besides having some medical specialties for the first time such as urology and orthopaedic surgery.”

In Khartoum, MPs have confirmed the spread of cancers, malaria, kala-azar and “Abyssinian fever” in many states.

They have stressed the need to combat them and provide medicines and medical cadres.

Health Minister Bahar Idris Abu Garda acknowledged a rise in deaths and infections of malaria since 2014 amid a decline in control due to decreasing government and global support.

He pointed out that “there more deaths and infections with malaria in the states of Khartoum, El Gezira, White Nile, tRiver Nile, Kassala, South and West Kordofan, and East and Central Darfur.
