Leading LJM figure leaves movement

The deputy chairman of the former Darfur rebel group the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), Ahmed Abdel Shafi has left the movement and is abandoning any obligations relating to the Doha Peace Agreement. In a statement, Shafi said ‘the LJM led by Tijani Sissi, the head of the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) is in reality unable to to achieve the goals needed to bring any real positive change to Darfur and Sudan.’ Shafi was a leading figure at the signing of the Doha Peace Agreement with the government in July last year. He said ‘the LJM will hold an internal conference to consider the movement’s position and open dialogue with other political forces to work towards the overthrow of the regime in Khartoum.’ LJM spokesman Ahmed Fadel, told Radio Dabanga the defection of Ahmed Shafi did not come as a surprise as it has been expected for some time. He said the description by Shafi of the LJM as unable to contribute positively to Darfur was ‘premature’, as the movement is yet to implement its plans. Sissi arrives in El Fasher Meanwhile, Tijani Sissi, head of the Darfur Regional Authority arrived in El Fasher today and told a press conference that the DRA will begin work officially on Wednesday. He said ‘the main issue in Darfur is the existence of the IDP camps. If the problems of the camps are not solved, the issues of Darfur will not be solved.’ Sissi also said the majority of detainees in prisons in Darfur were convicted as criminals, rather than arrested as political prisoners. He will form a committee with the Ministry of Justice to decide how to deal with prisoners in the region.
