24 July 2013. Um Maraheik: Ibrahim Hamid Mohamed is a volunteer teacher at the secondary school for boys and girls in Um Maraheik, North Darfur. He lives few kilometers from the village and he needs to walk two hours everyday to teach the students. The center, built in December 2012, doesn't have professional teachers and, while it's waiting to be provided by the Ministry of Education, Hamid Mohamed decided to assume the responsibility to educate the students without being paid. "I want to honor this new school making it operative", says Mr. Hamid. This school, with 6 classrooms, was sponsored by UNAMID DDR (Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration) as part of a Community Based-Labour Intensive Project (CLIP). Before, the 60 students in this center, all aged 14-17 years, used to travel to El Fasher everyday (25 kilometers away) to receive their education. Photo by Albert González Farran, UNAMID
