Alhag\u2019s pitch centred on two best friends, Wilson and Lokain, whom she noticed during morning runs through Jabarona, just outside Omdurman. The 11 and 12-year-old boys lived on the streets and collected plastic bottles for a meagre profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Khartoum 2025 Sudanese filmmakers turn war into intimate portraits\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/lasyGVpgNzM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Snoopy\u2019s story followed Majdi, a civil servant who questioned his integrity working for a military-led government and harboured a passion for racing pigeons. They remained committed to telling the characters\u2019 daily lives. Though, how the team would incorporate war as an additional element in the film, especially without the original backdrop in Sudan, wasn\u2019t clear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had to make sure that someone actually tells the story of the people on the ground,\u201d said Snoopy, describing these personal stories as the gap in media coverage. \u201cThe majority of the news was the bombing, the areas that the [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/un-fact-finding-mission-civilians-targeted-in-sudans-war-of-atrocities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paramilitary Rapid Support Forces<\/a>] (RSF) was taking over, but not like a personal perspective \u2013 what people were going through \u2013 how they were eating, how they were getting money, how they were surviving in these war zones, how they were dealing with the RSF personally, and what made them decide to leave.\u201d The whole crew intended for the characters to resonate with others enduring the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each member of the team evacuated at varying stages of the conflict and reached Nairobi by the end of 2023, where the project became more experimental. With Khartoum inaccessible, a green screen became their substitute landscape; the directors then experimented with methods to draw out their characters\u2019 stories. Rawia took the boys to the park before asking them to reflect on anything difficult. Snoopy took Majdi to smoke shisha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By combining interviews, reenactments of good and difficult memories, animation, and candid dialogue, the final production makes the characters\u2019 dreams the most salient thing. <em>Khartoum<\/em> is additionally impactful for how it exposes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/hate-speech-fuels-future-wars-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">racism and classism<\/a> both in the production process and on screen. You can see it clearly in Majdi and Khadmallah. Majdi \u2013 lighter-skinned, upper-class guy who works for the government \u2013 and Khadmallah who\u2019s a college graduate \u2013 she couldn\u2019t find a job and ended up as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/women-vendors-protest-renewed-wave-of-police-violence-in-sudanese-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tea vendor<\/a>,\u201d said Snoopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the characters held preconceptions about each other at the outset of filming because their different backgrounds did not facilitate interaction in public. The five characters are Wilson, Lokain, and Majdi\u2014introduced above\u2014as well as Khadmallah and Jawad. Khadmallah is a tea vendor from the Nuba Mountains with a strong intellect for maths. They lived and cooked together and built mutual trust. Then, in the scenes on camera, each character called on the others to recreate pivotal memories or depict their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/three-years-of-war-despite-heavy-losses-sudans-youth-voice-renewed-hopes-for-the-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hopes for the future<\/a>. He said it subtly acknowledges the recurring cycle of bottle collecting. The classism inherent in this scene, as well as the racism in others, are aspects \u201cthe general audience doesn\u2019t see clearly, that\u2019s why we were always trying to push this,\u201d he said. Alhag added that the military dictatorship under former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/deposed-sudan-dictator-al-bashir-moved-to-merowe-for-medical-treatment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">President Omar al-Bashir<\/a> sought to Arabise and Islamise parts of the Sudanese population, atrocities for which the International Criminal Court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/joint-call-on-sudan-govt-to-transfer-al-bashir-to-icc-without-delay#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">issued warrants<\/a> for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. It was the second time a group of people passing the set got angry that the directors were representing Sudan with darker-skinned bodies and street kids thought of as dirty, uneducated, parentless, and generally disrespected. \u201cPeople thought we shouldn\u2019t film this because Sudan is supposed to be the clean places, the lighter-skinned people. Lokain, Wilson, and even Khadmallah \u2013 they don\u2019t represent that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Framing the film are the reflections and dreams of the characters. It starts with Khadmallah introducing herself: \u201cfrom a place where the earth and the trees sing. I\u2019m a Sudanese woman who dreams without fear.\u201d Wilson and Lokain fixated on a lion: \u201ca lion that roams Khartoum, and we\u2019re on its back. We\u2019re going to tell you how we found the treasure during the war.\u201d Majdi wavered on an idea of himself as either a coward or a brave man. Jawad spoke his fear of being without a home. \u201cI want to be known, to have purpose, to be someone who is loved,\u201d he said. These things are unrelated to the violence they endure. The film was an effort to reflect these people back to themselves, to relish the treasure in the midst of war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Khartoum<\/em> debuted at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January, then screened at Berlinale in February 2025 and the BFI London Film Festival in October. It has since been shown at various international film festivals and human rights events around the world. <em>Khartoum<\/em> is available to stream on <em>BBC Storyville<\/em>. Its directors are awaiting the day it can be screened in Sudan.
