When access to reliable information erodes, mistrust takes root. When public debate is distorted, social cohesion weakens. And when journalism is undermined, crises become far more difficult to prevent and resolve,\u201d Guterres says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u2018All freedom depends on press freedom. In 25 years, the average score of all 180 countries and territories in the ranking has never been this low. Only one per cent of the world\u2019s population lives in a country where press freedom is categorised as \u2018good\u2019. In 2002, that was still 20 per cent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAn important reason for the deteriorating global situation is increasingly strict legislation that has been applied since 2001, the year of the 9\/11 attacks, that erodes the right to information.
