The Council of the European Union has warned that the war in Sudan continues to devastate civilians, three years after the conflict began between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement published on Tuesday<\/a>, the EU said the conflict is \u201cdestroying lives and depriving the population of its aspirations of the 2018\/19 revolution\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bloc reaffirmed its support for Sudan\u2019s unity, stating it \u201cstrongly rejects any unilateral attempt to\u00a0establish parallel governance<\/a>\u00a0that could risk the partition of the country\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It renewed its call for an end to the fighting, urging all parties to engage in \u201cnegotiations towards an immediate and lasting ceasefire\u201d, and said it \u201cstands ready to back any credible, unified peace initiative\u201d. The EU also stressed that \u201cexternal actors<\/a>\u00a0must stop fuelling the war\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The statement warned that the\u00a0humanitarian crisis<\/a>\u00a0is worsening, saying \u201ccivilians are targeted, famine conditions persist, and displacement continues to destabilise communities and the region\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It added that \u201cattacks on civilians, healthcare, aid workers, humanitarian convoys and civilian infrastructure must stop\u201d, and that obstruction of aid \u201cmay constitute\u00a0war crimes<\/a>\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU highlighted ongoing abuses, stating that \u201cgrave violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law continue\u201d and insisting that \u201cimpunity must end\u201d. It also pointed to \u201csystematic conflict-related\u00a0sexual and gender-based violence<\/a>\u2026 on a horrifying scale, with rape being used as a weapon of war\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a conference in Berlin on 15 April, donors pledged\u00a0\u20ac1.5 billion in aid<\/a>, including \u20ac812 million from the EU and its member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reaffirming support for a civilian-led transition, the EU said \u201conly an independent and representative civilian process can restore legitimacy of the Sudanese state\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is long overdue to bring this devastating conflict to an end,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n
