The United Nations, alongside international partners including the United Kingdom and Kenya, has sounded the alarm over Sudan\u2019s rapidly deteriorating humanitarian crisis. In El Fasher, the besieged capital of North Darfur, civilians face deadly attacks, mass displacement, and famine conditions, while cholera and seasonal flooding add to the mounting suffering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UN officials have warned that\u00a0humanitarian operations<\/a>\u00a0are being severely hampered by insecurity, and millions are at risk. St\u00e9phane Dujarric, spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said: \u201cOur humanitarian colleagues are warning of a sharp decline in the humanitarian situation in El Fasher, where deadly attacks and fresh displacement are compounding the suffering of civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The International Organization for Migration reported that \u201cabout 7,500 human beings fled Abu Shouk displacement camp and parts of\u00a0El Fasher<\/a>\u00a0town in just a few days,\u201d between 17 and 19 September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Secretary-General expressed his grave alarm at the rapidly deteriorating situation in El Fasher, warning of growing risks to civilians trapped in the area,\u201d Dujarric added. Tom Fletcher, UN Humanitarian Chief, warned: \u201cEl Fasher is on the brink, with\u00a0civilians besieged<\/a>\u00a0and living in\u00a0famine conditions<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The violence follows\u00a0Friday\u2019s mosque attack<\/a>, \u201cin which over 70 people were killed,\u201d UNICEF said, noting \u201cat least 11 of the fatalities were children.\u201d A local aid organisation reported suspending operations due to \u201cthe security situation, which is unravelling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seasonal flooding and a\u00a0cholera outbreak<\/a>\u00a0compound the crisis. \u201cThe outbreak in South Darfur State is expanding, with over 5,200 suspected cases and more than 250 deaths reported since May,\u201d Dujarric said. The UN and partners launched a vaccination campaign targeting 1.9 million people across Darfur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Secretary-General calls once again for a concerted international action in support of the people of Sudan,\u201d Dujarric stressed, noting that Personal Envoy Ramtane Lamamra \u201cstands ready to support genuine efforts to end the conflict and establish an inclusive political process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UK and Kenya push for action<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A press statement released yesterday<\/a>\u00a0by the British government ahead of the UN General Assembly highlighted the UK\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said, \u201cAt this moment of intense global instability and conflict,\u00a0UK diplomacy<\/a> and leadership has never been more important. Innocent civilians are suffering in Gaza, Ukraine and Sudan. Countries worldwide are dealing with high levels of migration including displaced and trafficked people. And climate change is not just a future threat to our survival, but a source of chaos and suffering across every continent today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The press release states that Cooper will also highlight the need for directed action to support source countries linked to high levels of migration. It says that at the Sudan Ministerial Conference, she \u201cwill push for greater momentum behind peace efforts in Sudan and will bolster efforts to help those fleeing horrific violence in the region, including the investment of \u00a336 million to support Sudanese refugees in Eastern Chad<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot only will this aid help those living through the world\u2019s biggest humanitarian crisis, but it will help people to stay within their immediate region, meaning that they are better able to return when conditions allow,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Prime Minister\u00a0David Lammy<\/a>\u00a0added: \u201cIt\u2019s a privilege to lead the UK delegation at this year\u2019s UN General Assembly\u2026 In an era of century-defining wars in Ukraine, Gaza, and Sudan, we reaffirm our commitment to the United Nations and the values of its Charter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya\u2019s President William Ruto<\/a>\u00a0expressed deep concern over Sudan\u2019s escalating humanitarian crisis during the UNGA General Debate in New York, today. \u201cCivilians are caught in the crossfire of a needless war,\u201d he said, voicing support for the diplomatic efforts of [the Quartet<\/a>] Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the\u00a0UAE<\/a>, and the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ruto stressed: \u201cThere can be no military solution, and only political dialogue offers a viable path forward.\u201d He called on all parties, including the Rapid Support Forces and external actors, to respect Sudan\u2019s sovereignty and\u00a0territorial integrity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKenya reaffirms its unwavering support for a unified Sudan for the benefit of all its people,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
