As the world marks United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) World Population Day, Sudan is grappling with a deepening humanitarian catastrophe. Over 26 million people urgently need aid as famine, mass displacement, and the collapse of health services threaten lives across the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

UNFPA\u2019s\u00a0World Population Day 2025<\/a>\u00a0spotlights the largest-ever generation of young people, under the theme \u201cEmpowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful world.\u201d Yet in Sudan, where millions of children and youth face displacement, hunger, and the collapse of education and healthcare, this vision remains distant.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As UN Secretary-General\u00a0Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>\u00a0urged: \u201cLet us stand with young people and build a future where every person can shape their destiny in a world that is fair, peaceful and full of hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February, the UN launched a\u00a0$6 billion response plan<\/a>\u00a0for Sudan and neighbouring host countries. It warned that 4.8 million people face acute food insecurity, 1.8 million risk losing food assistance, and\u00a0two-thirds of displaced children<\/a>\u00a0may miss out on primary education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Displacement lies at the core of Sudan\u2019s crisis. Since the outbreak of war in April 2023, over 12.3 million people have fled their homes, nearly a third of them across borders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly one million have sought refuge in Chad, including more than\u00a0720,000 Sudanese<\/a>. Aid agencies say 90 per cent of those\u00a0displaced<\/a>\u00a0are women and children, many of whom have suffered rape, torture, and\u00a0sexual slavery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humanitarian operations continue to collapse under the strain. M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res (MSF) suspended all activities in\u00a0Zamzam camp<\/a>, home to nearly half a million people, in February.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eleven patients died during the evacuation, including five children, as teams were forced to abandon those in need of emergency surgery. \u201cMany people\u2026 are trapped in Zamzam,\u201d said MSF\u2019s Sudan country director\u00a0Yahya Kalilah<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sudan\u2019s health system is in free fall. Radio Dabanga sources report that 72 per cent of facilities in Khartoum are\u00a0no longer functional<\/a>. Water, sanitation, vaccinations, and maternal care are in disarray, and violence in Darfur has blocked aid deliveries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admissions for severe\u00a0acute malnutrition<\/a>\u00a0soared by nearly 44 per cent in 2024, reaching a record 431,015 children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As global attention turns to population rights and healthcare, Sudan stands as a grim warning. Humanitarian agencies are urging immediate international action to prevent further preventable deaths and long-term devastation.<\/p>\n
