{"id":20116554,"date":"2025-05-07T12:01:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-07T10:01:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20116554"},"modified":"2025-05-07T19:51:37","modified_gmt":"2025-05-07T17:51:37","slug":"2025-word-press-freedom-index-sudan-rates-156th-out-of-180","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/2025-word-press-freedom-index-sudan-rates-156th-out-of-180","title":{"rendered":"2025 World Press Freedom Index: Sudan rates 156th out of 180"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>While press freedom has been under constant threat and subjected to information control and censorship throughout most of Sudan\u2019s modern history, as the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023, enters its third year, threats, attacks, and abuses against journalists have become much more frequent, forcing many of them to flee to neighbouring countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bitter reality is clearly reflected in Sudan\u2019s rating at 156<sup>th<\/sup> of 180 countries <a>in the <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/rsf-world-press-freedom-index-2025-economic-fragility-leading-threat-press-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 World Press Freedom Index<\/a>, published annually by the Paris-based advocacy organisation <a><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Reporters Without Borders<\/a>, who lament that while economic fragility a leading threat to press freedom globally, threats, attacks, and abuses against journalists have become more frequent in Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThirty-four countries stand out for the mass closures of their media outlets, which has led to the exile of journalists in recent years,\u201d the advocacy group says, singling out countries \u201cwhere economic difficulties compound the effects of political pressure,\u201d including <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/country\/sudan\">Sudan<\/a>, as well as Nicaragua (172<sup>nd<\/sup>, down 9 places), Belarus (166<sup>th<\/sup>), Iran (176<sup>th<\/sup>), Myanmar (169<sup>th<\/sup>), Azerbaijan (167<sup>th<\/sup>) and Afghanistan (175<sup>th<\/sup>), \u201cwhere economic difficulties compound the effects of political pressure&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"World Press Freedom Index 2025\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JZFZ_QiXqWQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudan\u2019s ranking at 156<sup>th<\/sup> shows a drop from 149<sup>th<\/sup> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/2024-world-press-freedom-index-quantifies-threat-to-media-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 index<\/a>, which had changed little from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/world-press-freedom-day-2023-media-in-sudan-face-increasing-harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 index<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-journalists-syndicate-criticize-terrible-regression-of-press-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">151<sup>st<\/sup> in 2022<\/a> following the military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-military-seizes-power-arrests-pm-and-civilian-ministers-in-dawn-coup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coup d\u2019\u00e9tat of October 25, 2021<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/world-press-freedom-day-in-sudan-still-a-lot-of-work-to-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">159 in 2021<\/a>, but has nominally \u2018improved\u2019 from a consistently low rating of around <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/index?year=2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">175<sup>th<\/sup><\/a> before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/al-bashir-deposed-army-seizes-power-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">overthrow of the Al Bashir dictatorship<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u2018During demonstrations, journalists are systematically attacked and insulted, or even arrested and tortured, by both sides in the Sudan war\u2026\u2019 \u2013 Reporters Without Borders<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThreats to journalists have intensified in recent years,\u201d Reporters Without Borders says. \u201cDuring demonstrations, they are systematically attacked and insulted, or even arrested and tortured, by both the regular army and the Rapid Support Forces. Journalists who criticise the authorities or publish compromising documents are monitored. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-women-journalists-systematic-targeting-and-a-heavy-price-in-wartime\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Women journalists, in particular<\/a>, are subjected to intimidation, threats or reprisals.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In its <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/country\/sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudan country profile<\/a>, the advocacy group underscores that \u201cthose who harass and attack journalists are protected by the authorities and enjoy total impunity,\u201d confirming that \u201csince the start of the civil war on 15 April 2023, the premises of some media outlets have been attacked and looted, and attacks and abuses against journalists have increased significantly, forcing many of them to flee to neighbouring countries\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As similarly highlighted by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/as-the-world-celebrates-artificial-intelligence-ai-sudanese-journalism-loses-memory-in-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudan Media Forum<\/a> to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/unesco-world-press-freedom-day-2025-sudan-media-landscape-in-disarray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Press Freedom Day<\/a> on May 3, more than 400 journalists have fled to neighbouring countries, at least 31 journalists working in the media field have been killed by the various parties to the conflict, at least 17 others have been detained , while Sudanese media outlets have been forced into in exile, trying to continue operating in extremely difficult conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, Reporters Without Borders warn that \u201calthough physical attacks against journalists are the most visible violations of press freedom, economic pressure is also a major, more insidious problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u2018The global state of press freedom is now classified as a \u2018difficult situation, for the first time in the history of the World Press Freedom Index\u2026\u2019 \u2013 Reporters Without Borders<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The economic indicator on the World Press Freedom Index now stands at an unprecedented, critical low as its decline continued in 2025, the advocacy group says. As a result, the global state of press freedom is now classified as a \u201cdifficult situation\u201d for the first time in the history of the Index.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGuaranteeing freedom, independence and plurality in today\u2019s media landscape requires stable and transparent financial conditions. Without economic independence, there can be no free press,\u201d says Reporters Without Borders Editorial Director Anne Bocand\u00e9. \u201cWhen journalists are impoverished, they no longer have the means to resist the enemies of the press \u2014 those who champion disinformation and propaganda. The media economy must urgently be restored to a state that is conducive to journalism and ensures the production of reliable information, which is inherently costly\u2026 The media\u2019s financial independence is a necessary condition for ensuring free, trustworthy information that serves the public interest,\u201d Bocand\u00e9 says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u2018A climate of fear and repression has prevailed, preventing the press from fulfilling its role in reporting the truth, exposing violations, and informing the public\u2026\u2019 \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/on-world-press-freedom-day-sounding-the-alarm-over-horrific-violations-against-journalists-and-the-absence-of-media-freedoms-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudan Media Forum<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>World Press Freedom Day\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As reported by Radio Dabanga as the world marked UNESCO World Press Freedom Day 2025 last week, under the theme \u201cReporting in the Brave New World: The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media\u201d, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/unesco-world-press-freedom-day-2025-sudan-media-landscape-in-disarray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudan shows the dark side of this transformation<\/a> where war, disinformation and digital manipulation work together to silence truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst the Sudanese Armed Forces have slowly regained control over much of Khartoum, reports are confirming that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-war-leaves-media-infrastructure-in-ruins-90-of-facilities-destroyed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at least 90 per cent of media<\/a>, including TV, radio, and newspaper facilities have been completely destroyed during the hostilities, while looters have stripped any usable equipment and assets in the city that has always been Sudan\u2019s main media hub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sudan Media Forum<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The media landscape in Sudan has transformed into an arena of grave dangers, where journalists and media workers face existential threats and systematic violence from the parties to the conflict,\u201d the Sudan Media Forum warned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/on-world-press-freedom-day-sounding-the-alarm-over-horrific-violations-against-journalists-and-the-absence-of-media-freedoms-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint statement<\/a> to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/unesco-world-press-freedom-day-2025-sudan-media-landscape-in-disarray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World Press Freedom Day<\/a> on May 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese direct violations are coupled with a near-total absence of press freedom and freedom of expression in large parts of Sudan. Severe restrictions have been imposed on media coverage, information has been deliberately withheld, the headquarters of many media institutions have been closed or destroyed, and a climate of fear and repression has prevailed, preventing the press from fulfilling its role in reporting the truth, exposing violations, and informing the public,\u201d the Sudan Media Forum laments.<\/p>\n\n\n<div
