{"id":20116153,"date":"2025-04-22T10:15:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T08:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20116153"},"modified":"2025-04-23T20:19:27","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T18:19:27","slug":"sudan-war-3-million-in-mass-exodus-from-north-darfur-capital","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-war-3-million-in-mass-exodus-from-north-darfur-capital","title":{"rendered":"Sudan war: 3 million in mass exodus from North Darfur capital"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The escalating ground offensive and shelling in battles between the (Sudanese Armed Forces) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in and around the North Darfur capital of El Fasher over the past week, has resulted in a new humanitarian emergency, as \u2018at least three million\u2019 displaced civilians have fled westwards, and are overwhelming resources in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/thousands-displaced-from-el-fasher-camps-swell-tawila\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tawila and Jebel Marra<\/a> areas.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, the stream of newly displaced, and mostly re-displaced people includes at least half a million former residents of Zamzam camp, which has been effectively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/north-darfur-half-a-million-people-flee-final-catastrophe-as-zamzam-camp-obliterated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obliterated<\/a>. Untold hundreds have died, thousands injured, in what commentators have termed \u2018the final catastrophe\u2019 for the camp. Graphic evidence is provided in a <a href=\"https:\/\/files-profile.medicine.yale.edu\/documents\/d19933e5-1d04-4a4a-a494-7b22224555ff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report published last week<\/a> by the Humanitarian Research Lab (HRL) at the Yale School of Public Health, with satellite imagery showing the effects of fires and destruction caused by artillery shelling and drone attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"\u064a\u0648\u062b\u0642 \u0647\u0630\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0641\u064a\u062f\u064a\u0648 \u0645\u0639\u0627\u0646\u0627\u0629 \u0646\u0627\u0632\u062d\u064a \u0627\u0644\u0641\u0627\u0634\u0631 \u0635\u0628\u0627\u062d \u064a\u0648\u0645 \u0627\u0644\u0627\u062b\u0646\u064a\u064621 \u0623\u0628\u0631\u064a\u0644 2025 \u0648\u0647\u0645 \u064a\u0643\u0627\u0641\u062d\u0648\u0646 \u0644\u0644\u062d\u0635\u0648\u0644 \u0639\u0644\u0649 \u0645\u064a\u0627\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0631\u0628\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nhcm0Co5nWE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The civilian authority in the areas controlled by the Sudan Liberation Movement faction led by Abdelwahid El Nur (SLM-AW), which controls Tawila and large parts of Jebel Marra to the west of the capital, as well as Nierteti in Central Darfur, have declared a state of humanitarian emergency in the areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The head of the SLM-AW civil authority, Mujiburahman El Zubair, told Radio Dabanga yesterday that \u201cthe crisis exceeds the resources and capabilities of the movement, the civil authority and the host community,\u201d noting that the number of displaced people flowing into the area is constantly increasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Millions displaced<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Zubair estimates the influx to be at least 3.3 million people from El Fasher, and the peripheral Zamzam and Abu Shouk camps. In an interview with Radio Dabanga, he says that that \u201cbetween 250 and 400 displaced people have been arriving in areas controlled by the movement every hour since April 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe arrive in rickety vehicles, carts, or on foot, in dire humanitarian conditions,\u201d he says. \u201cMost of the displaced are women, children, and seniors. At least 500 are unaccompanied children. He also highlights the urgent need for food, healthcare, and sanitation, and said that the displaced are compelled relieve themselves in the open, which could trigger a major health disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Zubair, called on the international community and organisations \u201cto assume their responsibilities and intervene urgently to rescue the displaced and provide them with assistance\u201d. El Zubair says that his authority has organised community convoys to provide support to the newly displaced, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UN<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The humanitarian crisis is further corroborated in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/un-condemns-north-darfur-bloodbath-call-for-all-belligerents-to-comply-with-their-obligations-under-international-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">separate statement on Sunday<\/a> by UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, who confirms that the most recent hostilities \u201chave pushed an estimated 400,000-450,000 people toward Tawila, areas surrounding Jebel Marra, and further. These population movements are increasingly fluid, unpredictable, and fuelled by ongoing hostilities and fears of a broader offensive on El Fasher.
