A senior United Arab Emirates (UAE) official has dismissed Sudan\u2019s case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) as a \u2018farcical action\u2019, accusing the de-facto Sudan government of distorting the truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, launched a fierce defence of his country\u2019s position in an\u00a0op-ed published by\u00a0The National<\/em><\/a>, a UAE-based English-language newspaper, ahead of Thursday\u2019s public hearings at the ICJ in The Hague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sudan\u00a0filed the case<\/a>\u00a0on March 6, accusing the UAE of violating the Genocide Convention by supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which stands accused of mass atrocities against the\u00a0Masalit people in West Darfur<\/a>, from April to November 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2023<\/a>, Radio Dabanga reported the shocking testimony from Mujeebelrahman Yagoub, the Assistant Commissioner for Refugees in West Darfur, who states that corpses were piling up in the streets, with entire families exterminated and buried in mass graves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The West Darfur Doctors Union echoed the horror, stating, “What happened in Rwanda in 1994 is now being repeated in El Geneina.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human Rights Watch<\/a>\u00a0further reported that the ethnic cleansing in West Darfur\u2019s capital of El Geneina had claimed the lives of thousands and left hundreds of thousands displaced as refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe unequivocally condemn the atrocities committed by both parties and call for their immediate cessation,\u201d Gargash wrote, while rejecting Sudan\u2019s claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He called the legal move \u201ca political game and publicity stunt – an attempt to drag a longstanding friend of Sudan and Africa into the conflict they themselves have fuelled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis follows the SAF\u2019s absurd actions at the UN Security Council, which were similarly built on fabrications, falsehoods and fiction,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The case alleges the\u00a0UAE provided military<\/a>, financial and political support to the RSF in its war with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), which began in April 15 2023, a claim supported by UN monitors but repeatedly\u00a0denied by the UAE<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the UN Security Council\u2019s\u00a09,611th meeting<\/a>\u00a0in April last year, Sudan\u2019s Permanent Representative, El Harith Idriss Mohamed, directly alleged UAE involvement. In response, the\u00a0UAE<\/a>\u00a0dismissed the accusations and evidence as \u201cbaseless allegations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gargash urged both sides to return to peace talks. \u201cThis war can end today if both sides agree to disengage and accept the repeated offers for talks made by the international community and trusted partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UAE is expected to contest the admissibility of the case at the hearings.<\/p>\n
