The camp, located 15 km south of El Fasher in North Darfur, has reportedly been transformed into a strategic hub with tanks, drones, heavy weaponry, military checkpoints, and trenches, along with the installation of satellite equipment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe use of IDP camps for military purposes exposes civilians to grave risks,\u201d warned the **joint statement by rights groups, highlighting violations of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/north-darfur-war-victims-suffer-loss-hunger-and-illness-in-el-fashers-zamzam-camp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zamzam camp<\/a>, home to hundreds of thousands of displaced people, now faces heightened threats of retaliatory strikes amidst ongoing fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Famine conditions, classified as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcinfo.org\/ipcinfo-website\/countries-in-focus-archive\/issue-107\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Integrated Food Security Phase Classification<\/a>&nbsp;(IPC) Phase 5, the highest level on the IPC Acute Food Insecurity scale, were confirmed in July at the Zamzam displacement camp, leaving thousands of children facing life-threatening malnutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Under siege\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Coordination of Displaced Persons in Zamzam camp detailed alarming developments between 12 and 13 November, accusing the *<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/north-darfur-joint-force-seizes-strategic-areas-zaghawa-and-arab-leaders-sign-accord#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joint Forces<\/a>, made up of SAF-aligned insurgents, of turning the camp into a combat zone. \u201cThis blatant militarisation puts the most vulnerable at immediate risk,\u201d their statement read.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Efforts to secure a ceasefire have repeatedly faltered. SAF\u2019s refusal to engage in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-war-parties-stymie-geneva-talks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Geneva-led<\/a>&nbsp;talks this summer drew sharp criticism from international bodies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Demands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rights groups are urging all parties to withdraw troops from Zamzam and other displacement settlements across Darfur. They have also called for an immediate halt to aerial bombardments and heavy artillery use in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/abdelwahid-appeals-to-belligerents-to-spare-north-darfur-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">residential areas<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe African Union must take the lead in pressuring Sudan\u2019s warring factions to commit to meaningful dialogue,\u201d the statement stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>*<em>The Darfur Joint Force (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/north-darfur-joint-force-seizes-strategic-areas-zaghawa-and-arab-leaders-sign-accord#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudanese Joint Forces<\/a>) is made up of fighters of the Sudan Liberation Movement faction headed by Darfur Governor Minni Minawi (SLM-MM), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/minawis-sudan-liberation-movement-to-fight-alongside-army\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JEM faction<\/a>\u00a0led by Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim (JEM-JI), and several small rebel groups. These movements formed the Darfur Joint Force in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/new-security-forces-for-darfur-as-juba-peace-agreement-is-slowly-implemented\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June 2022<\/a>\u00a0as agreed in the 2020 Juba Peace Agreement, to protect the people of Darfur.
