French-manufactured military technology incorporated into armoured personnel carriers (APCs) made by the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is being used on the battlefield in Sudan in what likely constitutes a violation of the UN arms embargo on Darfur, international human rights organisation Amnesty International has revealed in a new investigation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a briefing published earlier this year and reported by Radio Dabanga<\/a>, Amnesty International identified APCs in various parts of Sudan made in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). New research has shown that these APCs, which are in use by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), include sophisticated French-designed and manufactured reactive defence systems,\u201d Amnesty International say in a statement published today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Nimr Ajban APCs are manufactured in the UAE by the Edge Group<\/a>, and equipped with the French Galix system<\/a>. In pictures shared on social media and verified by Amnesty International, several Nimr Ajban APCs destroyed or captured by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have the Galix system visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Galix system \u2013 made by Lacroix Defence and jointly designed with Nexter (now KNDS France) \u2013 is a defence system for land forces that releases decoys, smoke, and projectiles to counter close-range threats. Lacroix Defence advertises that the Galix system \u201chides fighting vehicles from an approaching threat and protects the vehicles, main battle tanks, and APCs\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cThe Galix system is being deployed by the RSF in this conflict, and any use in Darfur would be a clear breach of the UN arms embargo. The French government must ensure that Lacroix Defence and KNDS France immediately stop the supply of this system to the UAE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
