The Transitional Sovereignty Council, chaired by Commander-in-chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, has today decided to open the Adr\u00e9 border crossing from eastern Chad into West Darfur for three months. This move aims to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to affected displaced civilians fleeing violence in Darfur.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the council’s directive, issued in a circular, it instructs the recently formed\u00a0Joint National Committee for Humanitarian Emergencies<\/a>\u00a0to coordinate with\u00a0Qatar\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0humanitarian aid officials, to manage the opening of the Adr\u00e9 crossing. This decision responds to repeated calls from the United Nations and various international organisations for expanded access to aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coinciding with the second day of diplomatic talks in\u00a0Geneva<\/a>\u00a0focused on a ceasefire and humanitarian aid delivery, the decision is notable for the\u00a0absence of the SAF<\/a>\u00a0from the discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UN Deputy Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs,\u00a0Toby Harward<\/a>, highlighted new logistical challenges, including heavy rains<\/a> threatening to close the\u00a0El Tina border crossing<\/a>, connecting Chad and North Darfur. Harward emphasised the urgent need for alternative access routes to ensure aid reaches vulnerable populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing displaced leaders in Nertiti, Central Darfur, Harward underscored the necessity for access through all major crossings and airports in Darfur to support consistent aid delivery. He noted ongoing negotiations with authorities in Port Sudan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to facilitate aid access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Previously, the government had resisted opening Adr\u00e9, citing its use for\u00a0military supplies to the RSF<\/a><\/p>\n
