RSF (@RSF_inter) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RSF_inter\/status\/1786247971060760846?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 3, 2024<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA growing number of governments and political authorities are not fulfilling their role as guarantors of the best possible environment for journalism and for the public\u2019s right to reliable, independent, and diverse news and information.\u201d Reporters Without Borders says it sees \u201ca worrying decline in support and respect for media autonomy and an increase in pressure from the state or other political actors\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/rsf.org\/en\/map-2024-world-press-freedom-index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">colour-coded map<\/a> that accompanies the ratings show that press freedom in Sudan is in a \u201cvery serious situation\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u2018This disempowerment sometimes goes hand in hand with more hostile actions that undermine the role of journalists, or even instrumentalise the media through campaigns of harassment or disinformation\u2026\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Reporters Without Borders editorial director Anne Bocand\u00e9 points out \u201ca worrying trend revealed by the 2024 World Press Freedom Index: a decline in the political indicator&#8230; States and other political forces are playing a decreasing role in protecting press freedom. This disempowerment sometimes goes hand in hand with more hostile actions that undermine the role of journalists, or even instrumentalise the media through campaigns of harassment or disinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Out of a total of 180 countries rated, with Sudan\u2019s neighbour Eritrea in the dubious position of last place, Sudan ranks 149, behind several regional neighbours, including Somalia (145), Libya (143), Ethiopia (141), but ahead of Egypt (170). Sudan\u2019s ranking shows little change from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/world-press-freedom-day-2023-media-in-sudan-face-increasing-harassment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2023 index<\/a>, when it was rated 148. It shows a slight \u2018improvement\u2019 from its rating of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-journalists-syndicate-criticize-terrible-regression-of-press-freedom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">151 in 2022<\/a> following the military <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-military-seizes-power-arrests-pm-and-civilian-ministers-in-dawn-coup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coup d\u2019\u00e9tat of October 25, 2021<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/world-press-freedom-day-in-sudan-still-a-lot-of-work-to-do\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">159 in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, Sudanese journalists are trapped in a brutal, year-long conflict with no ceasefire in sight. Despite local, regional, and international efforts, entrenched positions by the military and Rapid Support Forces prolong the suffering and threaten a full-blown humanitarian crisis, as repeatedly warned, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/%D8%A8%D9%8A%D8%A7%D9%86_%D9%85%D9%86%D8%AA%D8%AF%D9%89_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B9%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%85_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%AF%D8%A7%D9%86%D9%8A_%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%AC%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%B2%D9%8A.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joint statement<\/a> by the <a><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-media-forum-launches-standwithsudan-campaign-to-address-famine-and-human-rights-abuses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudan Media Forum<\/a> to coordinate with World Press Freedom Day 2024 says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe press has become a target. Journalists, both men and women, face systematic violence \u2013 killings, destruction of media houses, censorship, and illegal occupations. This \u2018media blackout\u2019 prevents them from reporting, informing the public, and upholding press freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe conflict has fractured Sudan, leaving it vulnerable. Both sides wage a \u201cwar on media,\u201d spreading propaganda and misinformation to manipulate public opinion. Communication networks are disrupted, further isolating citizens, and hindering their ability to access information and aid,\u201d the Sudan Media Forum
