{"id":20060853,"date":"2023-11-29T16:14:55","date_gmt":"2023-11-29T15:14:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20060853"},"modified":"2024-01-15T15:05:34","modified_gmt":"2024-01-15T14:05:34","slug":"un-secretary-general-el-burhan-hemedti-power-struggle-to-blame-for-sudan-catastrophe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/un-secretary-general-el-burhan-hemedti-power-struggle-to-blame-for-sudan-catastrophe","title":{"rendered":"UN secretary-general: El Burhan-Hemedti power struggle to blame for Sudan catastrophe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>A plain-talking UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres lays the blame for the ongoing war and humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan and Darfur squarely at the feet of \u201ctwo generals that completely disregard the interests of their population\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Responding today to questions on the situation in Sudan at a press conference at the conclusion of the high-level dialogue between the United Nations and the African Union on developments in Africa, Guterres \u201ccalls a spade a spade\u201d and without specifically mentioning them by name, lambasted the Commander-in-Chief of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, and Lt Gen Mohamed \u2018Hemedti\u2019 Dagalo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Guerres was fielding questions from journalists, alongside Moussa Faki, Chairperson of the African Union Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2018This is the fault of those that sacrifice the interests of their people for a pure struggle for power\u2026\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"African Developments: UN Chief &amp; African Union Commission Conference | United Nations\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ETv9ymsx9a0?start=1472&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have two generals that completely disregard the interests of their population, that in a struggle for power, have been fighting, in some situations with massacres like the one of the <a href=\"Massalit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Masalit<\/a> that has occurred, after a gigantic effort that was led by the African Union, that established an agreement [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/historic-agreement-signed-by-sudan-govt-armed-groups-in-juba\">Juba 2020<\/a>] that should lead to a full democratisation of Sudan, and all of a sudden, instead of implementing that agreement, they do <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-military-seizes-power-arrests-pm-and-civilian-ministers-in-dawn-coup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coups d&#8217;\u00e9tats<\/a>, and after that they fight each other, and probably with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-general-accuses-mafia-state-emirates-of-supplying-rsf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">support in money and weapons by some others<\/a>, and then people say it\u2019s the fault of the African Union or United Nations. I think it\u2019s time to call a spade a spade\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laying the blame at the leaders of the warring parties, Guterres said: \u201cThis is the fault of those that sacrifice the interests of their people for a pure struggle for power, and of the ones that support them, based on considerations that I would not like to comment on today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International voices have appealed to the UN to <a href=\"increase%20rather%20than%20decrease%20its%20presence%20in%20Sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increase rather than decrease its presence in Sudan<\/a>, following a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-govt-terminates-unitams-un-secretary-general-appoints-new-envoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unilateral decision by the Khartoun junta<\/a> to close the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS).<\/p>\n<div class=\"sws_supernormalaction\"><button
