{"id":20045858,"date":"2023-07-14T11:05:59","date_gmt":"2023-07-14T09:05:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20045858"},"modified":"2023-09-01T16:15:41","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T14:15:41","slug":"mass-grave-found-in-west-darfur-after-thousands-have-been-killed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/mass-grave-found-in-west-darfur-after-thousands-have-been-killed","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Mass grave found in West Darfur after thousands have been killed<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>GENEVA &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600;\" class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-07-14T11:05:59+02:00\">14\/07\/2023<\/time><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker T\u00fcrk, on Thursday called for a swift investigation into the killing of 87 people following the discovery of a mass grave near El Geneina, capital of West Darfur.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The victims, mostly Masalit*, were reportedly killed last month by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied gunmen, the UN human rights office (OHCHR) <a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/07\/1138647\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said in a statement<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Survivors were forced to dispose of the bodies in a mass grave near El Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, denying those killed a decent burial in one of the city&#8217;s cemeteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On April 24, nine days after fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary RSF erupted in Khartoum, battles tween the two warring parties took place in El Geneina. The RSF were soon joined by large groups of armed \u2018Arab\u2019 tribesmen, the army withdrew, and the violence turned into widespread attacks on the city and surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;Another 50 bodies were buried there the following day, including those of seven women and seven children.&#8217; &#8211; OHCHR<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sultanate of Dar Masalit (homeland of the Masalit) reported on June 19 that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/more-than-5000-reportedly-killed-in-el-geneina-genocide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 5,000 people were killed<\/a> in El Geneina between April 24 and June 12. More than 8,000 were left wounded in the 17 attacks on the West Darfur capital in that period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activists reported from the city on June 7 that people could not flee the city as it was \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/more-than-1100-people-killed-in-besieged-el-geneina-west-darfur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">almost entirely besieged<\/a>\u201d. Doctors in the area compared the situation with the Rwandan genocide of 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volker T\u00fcrk condemned the killings in the strongest terms and called for those responsible to be held to account.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least 37 of the bodies were buried on June 20 \u201cin the roughly one-metre-deep mass grave in an open area called El Turab El Ahmar [red soil,\u201d OHCHR said. \u201cAnother 50 bodies were buried there the following day, including those of seven women and seven children.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to credible information gathered by OHCHR, those buried were killed by the RSF and allied gunmen in the El Madaris and El Jamarik neighbourhoods in El Geneina between June 13-21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many were victims of the violence that followed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/wali-of-west-darfur-assassinated\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">killing of West Darfur Governor<\/a> Khamees Abakar on June 14, shortly after he was held by RSF officers. Others died from untreated injuries, OHCHR reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8216;There must be a prompt, thorough and independent investigation into the killings, and those responsible must be held to account&#8217; &#8211; Volker T\u00fcrk<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN rights chief said he was \u201cappalled by the callous and disrespectful way the dead, along with their families and communities, were treated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere must be a prompt, thorough and independent investigation into the killings, and those responsible must be held to account,\u201d he added, and called on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/battles-attacks-and-communication-blackout-continue-in-darfur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RSF and other parties to the conflict<\/a> \u201cto allow and facilitate searches for the dead, their collection and evacuation, in line with international law and regardless of ethnicity or other distinction\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OHCHR said witnesses reported that local mediation efforts for access to and burial of the dead have generally taken too long, leaving many bodies lying in the streets for days. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, the Darfur Bar Association stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/darfur-lawyers-bodies-scattered-across-el-geneina\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corpses remained scattered on the streets<\/a>, inside homes, and in various public facilities across the largely destroyed city of El Geneina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/relatives-of-masalit-sultan-killed-in-renewed-attacks-on-west-darfur-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Masalit digniitary who was killed<\/a> on or around 9 June by the RSF and their allies, reportedly had to wait 13 days before being allowed to collect the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Witnesses told staff that in cases where the RSF have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/darfur-update-el-geneina-clashes-continue-truce-holds-in-el-fasher-looting-in-nyala\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">allowed the collection of the dead<\/a>, following mediation with Arab and other community leaders, they have refused to allow those injured to be taken to hospitals for medical treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe RSF\u2019s leadership and their allied militias [!] as well as all parties to an armed conflict are required to ensure that the dead are properly handled, and their dignity protected,\u201d T\u00fcrk said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International humanitarian and international human rights law require all warring parties to ensure the injured receive medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The High Commissioner called on the RSF leadership to \u201cimmediately and unequivocally condemn and stop the killing of people, and to end violence and hate speech based on ethnicity\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>RSF Security Advisor Ali El Tahir told Radio Dabanga&nbsp;in mid-June that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-conflict-the-rsf-are-not-angels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Our forces never target people<\/a> and their properties\u201d.
