The rebel movement<\/strong> <strong>denies the existence of a ceasefire agreement with the government.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement yesterday, the spokesperson for the Blue Nile government, Fawatih El Bashir, said that the SAF repelled an attack launched by SPLM-N El Hilu* forces on El Kurmuk, located more than 650 kilometres south of Ed Damazin, capital of Blue Nile region**. They are now in control of the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe condemn the attack, and we fully support the SAF,\u201d El Bashir added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SAF reportedly seized 20 SPLM-N combatants. 13 SAF soldiers were injured.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Humanitarian Aid Commissioner in the Blue Nile region, Ramadan Yasin, told Radio Dabanga on Monday that 35,745 people were displaced as a result of the clashes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 32,000 people fled towards Dindiro area north of El Kurmuk. About 3,000 people crossed the border into Ethiopia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is an urgent need for food supplies in Dindiro,\u201d Yasin said. \u201cThere will be a meeting between the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) and other aid organisations in order to assess the needs of those displaced in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>UNITAMS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, the United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan (UNITAMS)<strong> <\/strong>expressed <a href=\"https:\/\/unitams.unmissions.org\/en\/statement-unitams-fighting-blue-nile-region\">its grave concern<\/a> about the recent violence in the Blue Nile region and urged \u201call parties involved to immediately cease fighting in the interest of protecting the local population\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less than a year ago, the region experienced violence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/at-least-65-dead-150-injured-in-intercommunal-sudan-clashes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">that killed hundreds of people<\/a> and displaced many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to experts, the security vacuum created by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-military-seizes-power-arrests-pm-and-civilian-ministers-in-dawn-coup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">coup d\u2019\u00e9tat in October 2021<\/a> cultivated a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-power-still-off-for-blue-nile-violence-victims\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resurgence of intercommunal violence<\/a> in a region already beset by lethal conflicts over land, livestock, and access to water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ceasefire<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, fighting between rebel fighters and army soldiers as well erupted in the Nuba Mountains in neighbouring South Kordofan. Clashes were reported <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/battles-persist-over-key-areas-in-sudans-south-kordofan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">near Delling<\/a> in the northern part of South Kordofan and in the area <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-army-rsf-clashes-reported-in-south-kordofan-capital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">south of the state capital Kadugli<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On social media, the SPLM-N El Hilu was accused of violating a truce with the Sudanese government. Mohamed Yousef, a leading member of the SPLM-N El Hilu, denied the existence of \u201cany ceasefire agreement\u201d with the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/huge-marches-of-the-millions-on-4th-anniversary-of-sudan-s-december-revolution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">December 2018 revolution<\/a>, we have repeatedly declared a unilateral ceasefire, so talk about us violating a ceasefire agreed on with the army is based on nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that fighting erupted in Delling \u201cbecause one of our combatants was killed by SAF soldiers at a market and they did not allow us to bury him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey also insulted us and called us names in a racist manner which forced us to exercise our rights and defend ourselves,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will free the Nuba Mountains from the military occupation, and we are committed to protecting people in the areas under our control,\u201d the rebel leader concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Radio Dabanga reported two weeks ago that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/nearly-180000-flee-from-sudan-capital-to-nuba-mountains\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">nearly 180,000 people<\/a> who fled the fighting in Khartoum arrived in areas in in South Kordofan controlled by the SPLM-N.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p>* <em>Abdelaziz El Hilu was deputy chairman of the Sudan People\u2019s Liberation Movement-North, led by Malik Agar, until he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/splm-n-deputy-chairman-resigns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resigned in March 2017<\/a>. Based in Kauda in the Nuba Mountains, El Hilu continued with most of the SPLM-N combatants in South Kordofan and Blue Nile region. The two factions&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/9-000-displaced-by-deadly-clashes-between-splm-n-factions-in-blue-nile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fought heavy battles<\/a>&nbsp;after that.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>**\u00a0On August 8, the governor of Blue Nile state issued a number of decrees, based on the October 2020\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/juba-peace-agreement-to-be-signed-despite-rebel-holdout\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Juba Peace Agreement<\/a>\u00a0(JPA), by which the state became a \u2018region\u2019 and its seven localities (Ed Damazin, El Roseires, Wad El Mahi, Bau, Geisan, El Tadamon, and El Kurmuk) became \u2018governorates\u2019. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idea.int\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/the-juba-agreement-for-peace-in-sudan-en.pdf\">According to Internati<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idea.int\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/the-juba-agreement-for-peace-in-sudan-en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">o<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.idea.int\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/the-juba-agreement-for-peace-in-sudan-en.pdf\">nal IDEA<\/a>, the JPA protocol concerning Blue Nile and [South and West] Kordofan grants autonomy to these areas but does not stipulate they should become a region.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"sws_supernormalaction\"><button on=\"tap:superwebshare-lightbox\"
