In West and Central Darfur, many displaced are living rough again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In clashes between army soldiers and paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces in Nyala over the weekend, the South Darfur largest crop market <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/video_2023-05-09_18-29-55.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burned to the ground<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initial reports about the losses say that about 10,000 [100 kg] sacks of sorghum, millet, wheat, chicken peas, lentils, fava beans, onions and garlic are lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe destruction of the crops market will certainly lead to a food gap in the state,\u201d trader Mersal Abdelkarim reported on Monday. \u201cIn addition to the shops at the market, the fire devoured the entire stock.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the losses of the small traders range between SDG2 to 3 million, and called on the authorities to compensate the affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abdelkheir Ahmed, head of the Nyala Crop Market Committee and member of the South Darfur Loss and Damage Committee, told Radio Dabanga that the wholesale crop market provides food to the entire state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe crops come in from South Darfur, but also from Central and West Darfur, and from Chad,\u201d he explained. He said he fears that the prices of the remaining crops will skyrocket. \u201cThe prices before the fire were appropriate. A [100 kg] sack of millet amounted to SDG35,000 pounds for instance.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Loss and Damage Committee has called on the merchants to file their complaints at the police station individually. \u201cWe have started the inventory process and hope to announce the final amounts of losses soon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/230502-EL-GENEINA-Residents-look-through-what-little-is-left-after-days-of-violence-Social-media-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20039327\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Residents of El Geneina in West Darfur look through what little is left after days of violence, May 2 (Social media)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Camps for the displaced<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Darfur Displaced and Refugee Camps Coordination Committee has warned of the disastrous effects of the war on the displaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, the Coordination Committee issued \u201can urgent appeal\u201d to the regional and international community and the United Nations, regarding \u201cthe catastrophic humanitarian and health situation in the camps for the displaced in Darfur\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee mentioned in particular the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/cautious-calm-in-west-darfur-capital-after-tribal-truce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">burning and plundering<\/a> of 105 shelters within El Geneina, capital of West Darfur, in addition to homes in the Abuzar camp for the displaced near the city, and the camps surrounding Zalingei in Central Darfur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMany displaced are now living in the open again. They need urgent services such as drinking water, food, life-saving medicines, and shelter materials, the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Coordination Committee called for the provision of safe passages for humanitarian aid purposes. \u201cThe biggest losers in this war are the Sudanese people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Humanitarian disaster<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the end of April, the Washington DC-based Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/fews-net-millions-of-sudanese-face-critical-shortages-of-food-and-water\">reported<\/a> that the fierce fighting between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that erupted on April 15 has led to a rapid deterioration in food security conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a near-term resolution to the conflict is \u201chighly unlikely\u201d, FEWS Net said, it foresees \u201ca sharp, rapid increase\u201d in the population facing Crisis and Emergency outcomes, with the largest increases anticipated in densely populated urban areas such as Khartoum and Darfur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBefore the outbreak of conflict, Sudan&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/fews.net\/east-africa\/sudan\/key-message-update\/march-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already faced a high burden of food insecurity<\/a>&nbsp;given the exceedingly high cost of living amidst the persistence of poor macroeconomic conditions and intercommunal conflict,\u201d the network added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On May 3, UN Secretary-General <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/un-secretary-general-khartoum-is-in-turmoil-darfur-is-burning-once-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ant\u00f3nio Guterres&nbsp;stated<\/a> that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/all-but-one-hospital-in-sudans-battle-zones-closed-or-operating-on-very-limited-capacity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Khartoum<\/a>&nbsp;is in turmoil,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/situation-in-west-darfur-capital-catastrophic-as-attacks-continue-more-flee-to-chad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Darfur<\/a>&nbsp;is burning once again\u201d. Citing statistics from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) he said that the current \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-humanitarian-situation-extremely-dire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">humanitarian catastrophe<\/a>\u201d has resulted in the displacement of at least 100,000 people, estimating that a further 800,000 would flee in the
