{"id":20038983,"date":"2023-05-07T15:57:11","date_gmt":"2023-05-07T13:57:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20038983"},"modified":"2023-05-14T18:41:29","modified_gmt":"2023-05-14T16:41:29","slug":"sudan-activists-reject-both-warlords-call-for-participation-in-peace-talks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-activists-reject-both-warlords-call-for-participation-in-peace-talks","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Sudan activists \u2018reject both warlords, call for participation in peace talks\u2019<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>KHARTOUM &#8211;<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600;\" class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-05-07T15:57:11+02:00\">07\/05\/2023<\/time><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>While representatives of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) commanded by Lt Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) headed by Lt Gen Mohamed \u2018Hemedti\u2019 Daglao began \u2018pre-negotiation talks\u2019 in Saudi Arabia yesterday, many Sudanese activists reject both warring parties.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resistance committees active in the neighbourhoods of eastern Khartoum said in a press statement on Tuesday that the usual \u201cbinary position (with\/against the army\/ militia), does not concern us as civilians in anything\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/khartoum-resistance-committees-to-form-local-legislative-councils\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">resistance committees<\/a>, \u201cthe two positions express a direct interest for each of the parties to the conflict in power,&#8221; while \u201cour position necessarily favours the only one affected by this war, the Sudanese people &#8211; whom the conflicting parties are attempting to get on their side and their allies, in order to gain popular and political support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe most important position now is the preservation of people&#8217;s lives and their livelihood, peace and security, and access to basic services.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Warlords<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jonathan Hutson, a strategic communications professional, who served as the architect of the <a href=\"https:\/\/enoughproject.org\/about\/past-campaigns\/satellite-sentinel-project\">Satellite Sentinel Project<\/a>&nbsp;launched in 2010 to monitor \u201cmass atrocities in Sudan\u201d, confirmed the view of the Khartoum East Resistance Committees in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JonHutson\/status\/1654965685124997122?t=xJIMHk-HXJjAvoyia8wg4A&amp;s=08\">a tweet yesterday<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on information from \u201creliable sources in Sudan, political parties, resistance committees, women&#8217;s organisations, trade unions &amp; human rights defenders,\u201d he states that \u201cSudanese civil society leaders reject both warlords [..], no matter who wins this unjust war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSudanese civil society leaders say that neither Gen. Burhan nor Hemedti will gain legitimacy, or the type of enduring cooperation needed to govern Sudan. They add that rule by strongmen would produce economic chaos, protests, mass killings, starvation, and diseases such as cholera.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of them, who asked to remain anonymous for reasons of security, told Hutson that \u201cWe cannot talk about rebuilding a peaceful, new Sudan as long as either of these two warlords dominates Sudanese political life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bargaining table<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The civil society activists insist that they be included at the bargaining table in order for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudans-embattled-saf-and-rsf-in-jedda-for-pre-negotiation-talks-on-humanitarian-truce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">peace negotiations<\/a> to succeed. They call for a ceasefire, civilian control of the entire government and all components of the state, including the armed forces and law enforcement, Hutson says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They call for paramilitary troops to be absorbed by the army under civilian authority, and demand that a transitional government under civilians will have the authority to root out corruption and to prepare for fair, transparent, and just elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hutson lauds the activities of the resistance committees on the ground. They \u201care doing amazing work and deserve more validation, resources, and support from the international community\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He further states that Sudan, devastated by the war, will need support from, but not interference by, the USA and the international community to rebuild and to help stabilise the Horn of Africa.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sws_supernormalaction\"><button
