{"id":20031109,"date":"2023-02-28T09:08:00","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T08:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20031109"},"modified":"2023-04-13T12:18:17","modified_gmt":"2023-04-13T10:18:17","slug":"sudan-activists-stand-firm-against-toxic-monopolistic-mining-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-activists-stand-firm-against-toxic-monopolistic-mining-practices","title":{"rendered":"<strong>Sudan activists stand firm against \u2018toxic, monopolistic\u2019 mining practices<\/strong>"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>NYALA \/ DELGO<\/strong> &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:600;\" class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-02-28T09:08:00+01:00\">28\/02\/2023<\/time><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>South Darfur activists staged a protest vigil in front of the secretariat of the state government in Nyala on Monday, to condemn the practices of the mining company that operates in the Aghbash gold mine in El Radoom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hamid Hammad told Radio Dabanga from the vigil that they are against the mining practices of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/gold-mining-suspended-after-environmental-protests-in-south-kordofan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Al Junaid company<\/a>, and accused it of \u201cmonopolising thousands of kilometres\u201d, calling for opening the area to all companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that mining has caused the spread of diseases and the deterioration of the environment, pointing to ponds that violate specifications and mining laws using toxic mercury and cyanide, and called for the use of safe methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He accused the Sudanese Mineral Resources Company of lack of transparency in collecting fees, calling for electronic collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Northern State<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Monday, a sit-in in Abu Sari in Delgo, Northern State, entered its seventh week, rejecting the mining activities using cyanide and mercury in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Protester Hatem Hasan confirmed to Radio Dabanga the protesters\u2019 insistence on resolving the dispute between them and the Delgo Mining Company through the judiciary, after all attempts to end the dispute between them failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that the sit-in committee announced the escalation of the protests to the national level, by carrying out a protest vigil in front of the Embassy of Qatar in Khartoum on March 9, with the participation of Nubian king Mohamed Ibrahim Kaboush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charges<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, the Delgo Mining Company is pressing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/road-closure-threat-as-mining-company-charges-sudan-activists-and-refuses-to-obey-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">charges against five protesters<\/a> in Sudan\u2019s Northern State for \u2018causing the suspension of a gold mining plant\u2019, which uses the highly toxic cyanide. In response, activists from Abu Sari in Delgo accused the company of not complying with the agreement signed between the local community, the local authorities, and the company itself, which stipulates that the plant should be relocated to a \u2018safe distance\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sudan has been witnessing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-transparency-and-policy-tracker-grassroots-resistance-to-gold-mining-must-be-backed-by-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">various protests<\/a> against the behaviour of gold mining companies, especially against the environmental and health risks posed by the use of highly toxic chemicals such as cyanide and mercury. Protests are also taking place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/more-tension-in-red-sea-state-around-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red Sea State<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/gold-mining-suspended-after-environmental-protests-in-south-kordofan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kordofan<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/more-anti-gold-mining-protests-in-sudan-as-cyanide-poses-environmental-and-health-risk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Darfur<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Environmental and health risks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"540\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Washing-gold-northern-state-Social-Media.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20031112\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Washing-gold-northern-state-Social-Media.jpeg 960w, https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Washing-gold-northern-state-Social-Media-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Washing-gold-northern-state-Social-Media-150x84.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Washing-gold-northern-state-Social-Media-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Washing-gold-northern-state-Social-Media-308x173.jpeg 308w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Washing gold in Sudan&#8217;s Northern State (File photo: Social media)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmentalists have been warning of the health and environmental hazards of using toxic mercury and cyanide to extract gold from ore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/people-in-south-kordofan-reject-traditional-gold-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for years<\/a>. Five years ago, a Sudanese environmental protection expert already warned that the pollution caused by the use of cyanide and mercury in gold mining \u201cconstitutes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudanese-environment-expert-warns-for-the-use-of-cyanide-in-gold-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">largest and most dangerous threat<\/a> to the country\u2019s environment\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent report on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-transparency-and-policy-tracker-how-mercury-is-poisoning-a-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mercury poisoning in Sudan<\/a> points out that \u201cyears of indiscriminate use of dangerous chemicals such as mercury, cyanide, and thiourea without protective measures for miners or local populations has exposed millions of citizens across Sudan to lethal risks\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the years, there have been plenty of reports of livestock, birds, and fish dying and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/team-investigates-health-effects-of-gold-mining-in-south-kordofan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medical issues<\/a> amongst humans, such as miscarriages and kidney failure, as a result of environmental pollution caused by gold mining activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Northern State authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/health-concerns-close-school-in-sudan-s-northern-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">closed the Sawarda school complex<\/a> after students suffered from coughing, vomiting, and shortness of breath. The situation was attributed to activities of the International Company for Mining, which spread mining waste and dust in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Central Bank of Sudan (CBoS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/gold-remains-sudan-s-largest-export-commodity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2022 report on foreign trade<\/a> states that gold still remains the largest export commodity from Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CBoS trade report indicated that Sudan saw its trade deficit lessen from last year\u2019s $4.7 billion deficit to this current year\u2019s deficit of $1.5 billion. The trade deficit reflects Sudan\u2019s import commodities exceeding its exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid growing concerns of economic and food insecurity in the region, as well as the political crisis currently embroiled in Sudan, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/un-secretary-general-human-rights-in-sudan-continues-to-deteriorate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United Nation\u2019s Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres stated in a report on September 2<\/a>&nbsp;that Sudan is at risk of being \u201cconstrained economically\u201d and this will likely \u201cdeter investors\u201d. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/gold-export-bank-of-sudan-announces-stiffer-control-measures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sudan is one of the largest producers of gold in Africa<\/a>, however production is often driven by unregulated, artisanal (individual subsistence) mining, and routine gold smuggling across international borders is a constant problem. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is estimated that between 50 per cent and 80 per cent of Sudan\u2019s gold is smuggled out of the country, with proceeds frequently used to finance internal conflicts.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sws_supernormalaction\"><button on=\"tap:superwebshare-lightbox\" class=\"superwebshare_normal_button1
