{"id":20030066,"date":"2023-02-18T20:19:22","date_gmt":"2023-02-18T19:19:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20030066"},"modified":"2023-10-27T09:39:40","modified_gmt":"2023-10-27T07:39:40","slug":"sudan-no-irrigation-water-for-farmers-in-northern-el-gezira","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-no-irrigation-water-for-farmers-in-northern-el-gezira","title":{"rendered":"Sudan: No irrigation water for farmers in northern El Gezira"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>KHARTOUM &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;\" class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-02-18T20:19:22+01:00\">18\/02\/2023<\/time><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>F<\/strong><strong>armers in the northern section of <\/strong><strong>the El Gezira Agricultural Scheme<\/strong><strong> complain of a<\/strong><strong>n acute<\/strong><strong> shortage of water <\/strong><strong>needed to<\/strong><strong> irrigat<\/strong><strong>e their crops.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farmer Mohamed Gusheiri told Radio Dabanga that they are not able to pay the rent for &#8220;an ordinary engine that pumps water from the White Nile or from the canals&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter the failure of the summer season because of torrential rains and declined irrigation water services, our winter crops are now withering,\u201d he complained. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rent of a water pump now costs SDG40,000 (about $68) per&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Feddan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">feddan<\/a>&nbsp;(4,200 square metres), in addition to fuel that costs SDG14,000 to operate the water pump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In end September last year, the Sudanese Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning announced new fees for irrigation water services. Farmers in the El Gezira Agricultural Scheme were to pay <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-s-farmers-reject-higher-taxes-bemoan-pest-threats-to-crops\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SDG6,000 per&nbsp;feddan<\/a>. The spokesperson for the El Gezira and El Managil Farmers Alliance&nbsp;said at the time that the farmers&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/farming-in-sudan-has-become-a-leap-in-the-dark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">were unable to pay<\/a>&nbsp;the increased fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the past years, the expenses for agriculture rose significantly, especially because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/economist-lifting-of-subsidies-in-sudan-leads-to-social-political-instability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">subsidies were lifted<\/a> by the Ministry of Finance which followed the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/world-bank-chief-visiting-sudan-lauds-progress-in-transition-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">demands of the World Bank<\/a>. \u201cThe Minister of Finance said at the time that lifting the subsidies would support the inputs \u2013 which did not happen,\u201d Ahmed Babiker, Secretary-General of the El Gezira and El Managil Farmers Association stated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/farming-in-sudan-has-become-a-leap-in-the-dark\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in June<\/a>. \u201cIf the situation continues in this way, there will be no cultivation anymore in El Gezira.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Torrential rains and floods in August <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/storms-and-rain-in-sudan-leave-122-dead-more-than-123-420-feddans-of-crops-destroyed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">affected at least at least 90,000 feddans<\/a> of agricultural land in El Gezira.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Burden\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El Gezira Agricultural Scheme, developed by the&nbsp;British in colonial times, used to be one of the world\u2019s largest irrigation projects. Water from the Blue Nile was distributed through canals and ditches to tenant farms lying between the Blue and White Nile rivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For nearly eighty years, the El Gezira Scheme remained the sole source of hard currency for the country, through the cultivation of cotton. During the last few decades, however, the cotton production was reduced to less than 100,000 acres. About 12 cotton gins in El Gezira state had to close their doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ousted President Omar Al Bashir described the Scheme in late 2014 as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-farmers-fury-at-al-bashir-s-accusations-of-theft\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a burden on the country\u2019s budget<\/a>\u201d. A year later, the Ministry of Agriculture amended the El Gezira Scheme Act, aimed at transferring land ownership to the private sector and foreign investors.<\/p>\n<div
