However cooperation with the Sudan government has deteriorated, ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan said in his 36th report to the UN Security Council (UNSC) in New York on Wednesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting his 36th report, prosecutor Karim Khan updated the UNSC on proceedings against Ali Kushayb, who has been charged with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/icc-trial-of-darfur-janjaweed-colonel-of-colonels-resumes-tomorrow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m delighted to say that the trial is making swift progress and the prosecution intends to close its case by the end of next month,\u201d said Khan. \u201cAs reflected in the report, this therefore makes the pace of the trial the most efficient since the establishment of the court,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the trial that began in April, 50 witnesses have given <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/icc-further-witnesses-testify-against-darfur-janjaweed-leader-ali-kushayb-today\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">harrowing testimony<\/a> over a period of 78 days in session.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large have had the opportunity to confront the accused, to have their accounts tested before independent impartial judges, creating a record that will pave the way at the end of the process for a determination to be made on what took place and whether the accused is responsible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although cooperation from the Sudanese Government is critical, the ICC prosecutor reported that many important promises and agreements \u2013 including Memoranda of Understanding signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/envoys-laud-icc-prosecutor-khan-s-visit-to-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">during his visit to Khartoum last year<\/a> \u2013 remain outstanding.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" improved, since my last briefing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><strong><em>\u2018Sisyphean efforts are required in order to simply obtain a single entry visa\u2026\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">Despite commitments, access to the country has become more difficult due to \u201cnew administrative hurdles\u201d, and \u201cSisyphean efforts are required in order to simply obtain a single entry visa&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when ICC staff have entered Sudan, they must wait for internal travel permits, including to go to Darfur. Upon his arrest, the Sudanese government <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-to-cooperate-with-icc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced its support for his transfer to the ICC<\/a>. Kushayb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-prosecution-indicted-ali-kushayb-last-year\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is also charged with a number of crimes by the Sudanese authorities<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>As previously reported by Radio Dabanga, Kushayb initially appeared before the ICC on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/icc-ali-kushayb-hears-charges-for-darfur-crimes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">June 15<\/a> 2021. He then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/darfur-janjaweed-colonel-of-colonels-ali-kushayb-faces-31-charges-at-icc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appeared before Pre-Trial Chamber II on May 24-26<\/a> to hear submissions from the prosecution and legal representation of the victims.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>From the start of pre-trial proceedings, Ali Kushayb\u2019s defence has always pivoted on \u2018mistaken identity\u2019, saying that he is not the person who perpetrated these crimes. However, on the opening day of the trial on Tuesday, senior trial lawyer for the prosecution, Julian Nicolls, told the court that the prosecution intends to present several witnesses (referred to only by a number for anonymity), who will testify that the accused is indeed Ali Kushayb, the feared so-called \u2018Colonel of Colonels\u2019.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>(Sources: UN \/
