{"id":20026206,"date":"2023-01-18T14:50:26","date_gmt":"2023-01-18T13:50:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/?p=20026206"},"modified":"2023-09-29T14:43:37","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T12:43:37","slug":"sudan-transparency-and-policy-tracker-grassroots-resistance-to-gold-mining-must-be-backed-by-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-transparency-and-policy-tracker-grassroots-resistance-to-gold-mining-must-be-backed-by-policy","title":{"rendered":"Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker: Grassroots resistance to gold mining must be backed by policy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-nowrap is-layout-flex wp-container-core-group-is-layout-6c531013 wp-block-group-is-layout-flex\">\n<p><strong>AKASHA \/ DORDEIB &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div style=\"font-style:normal;font-weight:700;\" class=\"wp-block-post-date\"><time datetime=\"2023-01-18T14:50:26+01:00\">18\/01\/2023<\/time><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cSit-ins and other forms of community protests, such as blockades of national highways and stoppage of pumping to Sudan\u2019s oil refinery, have become a common, and increasingly frequent, feature of civic opposition\u201d to Sudan\u2019s gold mining sector, reported Dr Suliman Baldo on Monday.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a Sudan Transparency and Policy Tracker (STPT) report tracing recent protests against \u201cthe capture of local resources by a powerful and kleptocratic central state and its commercial partners,\u201d the prominent Sudan conflict resolution analyst called for a \u201creform-minded, civilian-led government\u201d which can aid grassroots efforts to divest from harmful gold mining practices in Sudan.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The STPT attempts to encourage informed policy decisions both in Sudan and internationally on approaches to bring about stability and sustainable peace in the country. This report, <a href=\"https:\/\/sudaneseonline.com\/board\/15\/msg\/Community-Protests-in-Sudan%E2%80%99s-Gold-Mining-Sector%3A-Peaceful-Resistance-and-Repressive-Responses-Suli-1673890065.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Community Protests in Sudan\u2019s Gold Mining Sector: Peaceful Resistance and Repressive Responses<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>argues that \u201cit will take more than&nbsp;sporadic eruptions of grassroots resistance to put an end to Sudan\u2019s kleptocratic capture of natural resources.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDemands for government investment in the revival of collapsed public health and education sectors, and the provision of other services, such as regular clean water supply and electric power,\u201d are central demands of the protestors, Baldo&nbsp;said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Okasha<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>and Dordeib<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Okasha village in Halfa, Northern State, pollution, an increase in petty crimes, and the accumulation of plastic waste in the area have caused friction between the miners and the villagers. Residents have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/health-concerns-close-school-in-sudan-s-northern-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">protesting against the environmental damage<\/a> caused by the mine for years.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Villagers complain about \u201cwidespread environmental damage\u201d as a result of the use of toxins in gold mining activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Khatmi Hasan, an environmental activist in the area, told Radio Dabanga this week that Akasha has a mining market about a kilometre north of the village.&nbsp;\u201cTwo companies, Nugud and El Bashayer, that process mining waste containing mercury and cyanide temporarily store this waste [called <em>karta<\/em> in Sudan] at the market,\u201d he explained.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis market is located in a seasonal streambed [<em>khor<\/em>]&nbsp;that flows onto farmland and into the Nile. The Red Sea state Security Committee also&nbsp;called for the removal of the company.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Dordeib Protest Committee said in a press statement that the gold processing plant is located near urban areas and the main channel&nbsp;of Khor Dordeib which feeds agricultural and grazing areas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gold extraction through chemical treatment with materials containing cyanide is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/demanding-bodies-association-condemns-toxic-impact-of-gold-mining-in-sudan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">causing an environmental disaster<\/a> in Red Sea state, the local Demanding Bodies Association reported on November 25.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Mining companies<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2019, Director of Exploration of the Sudanese Mining Resources Company Naji Mahmoud claimed that there are 424 mining companies in Sudan that&nbsp;are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/march-against-new-gold-mine-in-northern-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">owned by members<\/a> of the ousted Al Bashir regime.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that 48 foreign companies operate in the sector, including Russian, Turkish and Chinese plants. He cited investment constraints because of influential former regime brokers. The director also claimed that certain security services finance themselves through&nbsp;the mining sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The vision of the local communities was realised in the first mining conference in December 2019. Solutions were based \u201con the fact that local problems are linked to the overall vision and the treatment lies in a change in policies and management structures.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main outcome of the conference was that the government should give the right of environmental oversight to local communities. \u201cDue largely to the instability in Sudan, the government did not endorse and implement the vision of these demand groups,\u201d noted Baldo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Health risks<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmentalists&nbsp;have been warning&nbsp;of the health and environmental hazards of the use of toxic mercury and cyanide to extract gold from ore&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/people-in-south-kordofan-reject-traditional-gold-mining\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">for years<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent report on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/sudan-transparency-and-policy-tracker-how-mercury-is-poisoning-a-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mercury poisoning in Sudan<\/a>&nbsp;points out that \u201cyears of indiscriminate use of dangerous chemicals such as mercury, cyanide, and thiourea without protective measures for miners or local populations has exposed millions of citizens across Sudan to lethal risks\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sudan Democracy First Group also highlighted the human and environmental costs of traditional gold mining in the region in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/democracyfirstgroup\/cyanide-plants-in-south-kordofan-state-human-life-is-a-price-for-gold-extraction?e=6edaf1933e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a report<\/a>&nbsp;published in November 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2018, a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/team-investigates-health-effects-of-gold-mining-in-south-kordofan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">medical team<\/a>&nbsp;led by the Health Minister of gold-rich South Kordofan investigated the increase in miscarriages, the birth of deformed children, and cases of kidney failure in El Tadamon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, Northern State education authorities decided to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dabangasudan.org\/en\/all-news\/article\/health-concerns-close-school-in-sudan-s-northern-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close the Sawarda school complex<\/a>&nbsp;in response to cases of coughing, vomiting, and shortness of breath among students. The situation was attributed to the poor environmental and health conditions due to activities of the International Company for Mining, which spread mining waste and dust in the area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div
