Victim’s relatives believe she was targeted deliberately<\/strong><\/p>\n

The student Ikhles Yaqub Adam was shot dead by members of the Sudanese Security Services in Zalingei\u2019s main market on Tuesday. Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that the victim, a 3rd<\/sup>-year student at Zalingei University, was shopping with some friends when she was struck by the bullet. According to the security forces, the incident happened by accident as they were chasing after someone else; they opened fire in order to catch that other person and hit Ms. Adam unwillingly. Two bystanders were also wounded in the shootings.\"\"<\/p>\n

The victim\u2019s friends and colleagues however indicated they don\u2019t believe the security service\u2019s explanation, stating that Ikhles had probably been deliberately targeted due to her being a member of the Sudanese Liberation Army (SLA- Abdel Wahid). The citizens from the neighborhood of Kandjomiyah, where she used to live, are currently mourning her death and protesting against the government; meanwhile the authorities implemented important security measures around Zalingei University, fearing the start of a students\u2019 mobilization.<\/p>\n

SLA-AW and JEM condemn incident<\/strong><\/p>\n

SLA-Abdul Wahid\u2013 spokesman Nimr Abdel told Radio Dabanga that the movement condemned the incident: \u201cThis assassination was planned by the Sudanese Government and carried out by \u2018security gangs\u2019. The Government aims to silence any free voice in Sudan and is now targeting people from every background, including students<\/em>\u201d. Nimr Abdel added that the movement would now target security forces in their operations in response to these actions: \u201cthis is happening all over Sudan, not just Darfur<\/em>\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

The Justice and equality Movement (JEM) also condemned the student\u2019s death, stating that the use and carrying of weapons should be prohibited in cities and densely populated areas such as markets: \u201cpeaceful civilians should not be terrorized by security forces<\/em>,\u201d JEM-spokesman Jibril Adam Bilal said. The JEM also condemned the security barriers allegedly imposed on the victim\u2019s neighborhood.  <\/p>\n
