He was killed by armed men after he attempted to rescue girls from being raped<\/STRONG><\/P>

A refugee, Ahmed Saleh, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Al Matar neighborhood of North Darfur\u2019s Kabkabiya locality on Tuesday.<\/P>
\n

Witnesses told Radio Dabanga that 52-year-old Adam Saleh was killed after he tried rescuing some girls in his neighborhood from four armed gunmen who were trying to rape them.<\/P>
\n

\u201cSaleh heard distressed calls from the girls and went to intervene. He tried to shake away one of the men who was trying to abduct a girl. But another armed man with a gun opened fire and loaded nine bullets into Saleh\u2019s chest which led to his immediate death,\u201d the witness said. The perpetrators reportedly fled the scene instantly to an unknown destination.<\/P>

Witnesses also told Radio Dabanga that the incident had been reported immediately to the local police and the United Nations African Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), which has an office 300 metres from the crime scene.<\/P>
\n

\u201cBut they only came to the site next morning. And when they arrived, some residents in the neighborhood gathered and pelted stones at the UNAMID personnel while chanting slogans demanding the prosecution of the offenders,\u201d a witness recounted.<\/P>
\n

The situation in turn prompted intervention from the Sudanese people and security service personnel who fired in the air to disperse crowds.<\/P>
\n

UNAMID: We weren\u2019t informed immediately<\/STRONG><\/P>
\n

The UNAMID confirmed the incident and said that the victim was killed by one of the four armed men who were trying to abduct a girl.<\/P>
\n

Deputy spokesperson Susan Emmanuel told Radio Dabanga that the officer next to the camp got information about the crime only the next morning and had sent soldiers immediately for investigation.<\/P>
\n

\u201cYes the refugees were upset with the UNAMID. I can also confirm that,\u201d she said. Emmanuel added that the officers in the camp had heard firing in the camp at night but hadn\u2019t taken any action because she said that it hearing gunshots was a routine happenstance. She assured that the UNAMID was trying to do everything it can to protect civilians in Darfur.<\/P>
