On Monday in Khartoum, 10 students were injured when clashes erupted during a heated debate between students affiliated to the Sudan Liberation Movement led by Abdul Wahid (SLM-AW) and the Liberation and Justice Movement (LJM), two Darfuri rebel groups.<\/p>\n
The confrontation in El Neelain University began when students belonging to the SLM-AW began a strong verbal attack on the leaders of the LJM. The LJM affiliated students allegedly retaliated violently, as students began to attack each other with poles, sticks and knives, said the witness.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of students ran out of the university fearing for their lives. The 10 injured students from both sides were taken to hospital, an unknown number in a critical condition.<\/p>\n
Ibrahim Abakr Ali, secretary of the Darfur Association of Students in Khartoum said that students at El Neelain must renounce violence and resort to dialogue. He expressed regret that Darfuri students were fighting and stressed ‘the losers of this incident are the children of Darfur themselves, while the winners are the regime in Khartoum.’<\/p>\n
Speaking from the University of Juba, Sadiq Musa Zakaria described the incident as shameful and warned students of resorting to violence as they would lose their places at examinations as well as in university accommodation. Zakaria called on students ‘for dialogue and logic, solidarity and unity amongst themselves instead of fighting to resolve their differences.’<\/p>\n
