The former UN Humanitarian Coordinator Dr. Mukesh Kapila has complained that the Chadian authorities are preventing him from visiting refugee camps in Eastern Chad.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Radio Dabanga, Kapila hinted the government of Chad may have faced pressure from the Sudanese government.<\/p>\n
There are about 300,000 people from Darfur, thought to be staying in the camps.<\/p>\n
The former coordinator had viewed video footage that showed the harsh conditions Darfuri\u2019s lived in.<\/p>\n
Kapila said many refugees are trapped, unable to fully reside in Chad and earn a wage, whilst at the same time being unable to return to Darfur for fear of further violence.<\/p>\n
He stated his main goal to visit the camps was to draw attention to the crisis in Darfur, which is being forgotten by the wider world and international community.<\/p>\n
Kapila also said there is a new genocide happening in South Kordofan by the same people using similar tactics as in Darfur.<\/p>\n
If there is no justice or accountability, he continued, there will be no peace.<\/p>\n
He called on the international community to demand President Al Bashir and Ahmed Haroun as well as others involved, be brought before the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Darfur.<\/p>\n
Chad expelled Dr Mukesh Kapila while he was attempting to visit Darfuri refugee camps this week. He was the UN representative for Humanitarian Operations in Sudan at the beginning of the Darfur conflict in 2003.<\/p>\n
He had first drawn attention to the humanitarian disaster in the Darfur region, causing his expulsion but the Sudanese government. Kapila\u2019s expulsion from Chad was based on order from the Inerior Minister of Chad who personally ordered him to leave.<\/p>\n
