In a federal prison in Port Sudan around a 140 prisoners on death row, the most of them from Darfur, clashed with the prison guards and police. Eyewitnesses informed Radio Dabanga that they saw police officers firing bullets at the inmates and heard sporadic gunshots until Wednesday evening. <\/p>\n

Eyewitnesses informed Radio Dabanga that they saw police officers firing bullets at the inmates and heard sporadic gunshots until Wednesday evening. There were deaths and injuries on both sides. The Commissioner of Port Sudan, Sheba Mohammed Babiker, issued a press release confirming the incident and stating that \u201csome of the inmates tried to escape after they broke the doors of the jail cells. The police tried to stop them which led to clashes.\u201d One policeman was killed and two were injured during the incident, a number of the inmates sustained injuries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Asir Ahmed Omr, the spokesperson of the police, told Suna News Agency that a number of the death row inmates tried to escape by jumping the jail walls when they were confronted by the guards and clashes broke out. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Due to the violence the market was closed down and citizens rushed to their houses while the police and security forces barricaded the main roads in the city leading to the jail. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
