A resident from Abu Shouk camp in El-Fasher, North Darfur, told Radio Dabanga that heavy rains destroyed more than 300 homes on Sunday, 2 September. He said one child drowned in a deep-water pond.<\/p>\n
A camp’s activist informed Radio Dabanga that dozens of families are now living in open areas and that sanitary conditions are deteriorating. He added the stagnant waters are optimal breeding places for mosquitoes that can transmit diseases.<\/p>\n
He appealed to UNAMID to drain the water from the camp and to help the families whose homes were destroyed. He also asked aid organizations, the Sudanese government and the Darfur Regional Authority to provide tents, plastic sheets and proper sanitation tools to the affected families.<\/p>\n
El-Fasher town<\/strong><\/p>\n At the same time, Radio Dabanga was informed that the heavy rains flooded the valley that divides the eastern and western sides of El-Fasher town. Residents added the bridge that connects both sides got severely damaged.<\/p>\n Residents claim they are now prevented from crossing from one side to another, causing them much suffering. They said the flood prevents many from reaching the market, the hospital or other instances that lie on the opposite side of the valley.<\/p>\n In the eastern section of El-Fasher is where the old town, the grand market, the military hospital and the government departments are located. The western section counts with the airport, new neighborhoods, UNAMID headquarters, the regional authority, El-Fasher University, and the Abu Shouk and Abuja camps.<\/p>\n
