A group of 38 congressmen urged US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, to impose sanctions on the Sudanese government for its failure to allow humanitarian aid organizations to access the regions of Blue Nile and South Kordofan.<\/p>\n

Mediators announced on August 4 that the Sudanese government reached an agreement with SPLM-N to provide humanitarian aid to the affected areas. However, to this date, no aid organizations have been granted access and the situation grows more critical by the day.<\/p>\n

In the letter of September 21, the congressmen stress their concern of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Blue Nile and South Kordofan. They emphasized that more than 650,000 people have been displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict in the borderlands.<\/p>\n

The UN Security Council issued a statement on September 21, expressing deep concern about the worsening humanitarian situation in all of Darfur’s states. “The members of the Council once again stressed the urgency of immediately delivering humanitarian relief supplies to the affected civilian populations, so as to avoid any further suffering or loss of life,” the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Sudanese humanitarian commissioner, Suleiman Abdel-Rahman, told the Sudanese News Agency (SUNA) that an airplane, belonging to a foreign aid organization, reportedly landed in the town of Kauda without permission from the Sudanese government.
