A Nertiti camps activist disclosed on Tuesday that between 23 and 25 thousand families have arrived in the area fleeing the battles between government and rebel forces in Central Darfur that erupted on 23 December last year.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Dabanga, he noted that some 15 or 20 families continue arriving in the camps everyday from Golo and the Jildu garrison area in West Jebel Marra, where much of the fighting took place.<\/p>\n

Nertiti is already home to more than 42.000 displaced persons according to the UN OCHA.<\/p>\n

In January, the UN announced that more than 30.000 people fled their homes as a result of the fighting between the Darfur rebel group SLM-AW and the Sudanese government.<\/p>\n

The humanitarian situation of the displaced is critical, the activist stressed. Two thousand children are malnourished, 300 of whom acutely, he said.<\/p>\n

Three organizations are currently operating in Nertiti, he noted, while other agencies are active elsewhere in the vicinity.<\/p>\n

A UN report disclosed that no inter-agency mission has been permitted access to West Jebel Marra since August 2011.<\/p>\n

Jildu is an important junction that connects East and West Jebel Marra (prized for its fertile land), located near the central town of Golo in Central Darfur.<\/p>\n
