The governor of North Darfur ordered that any member of the Abbala or Beni Hussein tribes who try to foil the reconciliation conference should be arrested. The talks are aimed at bringing the tribes together after violent clashes erupted between them over control of a gold mine in January.<\/p>\n

Osman Kibir gave the instructions this week to the technical justice committee that is handling the situation in Al Sareif Beni Hussein locality.<\/p>\n

He stressed the committee has the power to interfere with \u201cany problem\u201d that may occur between the Abbala and Beni Hussein until the conference takes place in mid-April in El Fasher, North Darfur\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n

Ahmed Mahdi Hamid, representative of the Beni Hussein, said his tribe has not yet begun preparing their participation in the conference. He disclosed his intention to hold a conference in Al Sareif locality to determine the negotiations agenda prior to the talks in El Fasher.<\/p>\n

On 6 March, Abbala leaders told Radio Dabanga they blamed the Sudanese government for the clashes, claiming Khartoum wants to have control of the gold mine for its own gains. One of them added the hostilities are the result of a plan orchestrated by the ruling National Congress Party (NCP).<\/p>\n

\u201cI am calling upon my relatives from both sides: bloodshed and deaths are needless. When you die, other people take advantage of your deaths\u2026 We have no enemy but the government. If the Beni Hussein annihilate the [Abbala] Rizeigat or vice-versa, they are both losers and the beneficiary is the government\u201d, he said.<\/p>\n
