Three armed men stormed a South Darfur prison on Monday afternoon and released two inmates who were held under suspicion of killing the son of the region\u2019s biggest gold trader last month.<\/p>\n

The gunmen, on foot, invaded Kass\u2019 detention center at about 4:00pm and locked its guards in a cell. Next, they released their comrades but kept the other prisoners inside their booths, sources said.<\/p>\n

A group was waiting for the gunmen and former inmates east of the city. They fired shots in the air to celebrate the success of the operation before fleeing on horsebacks and camels.<\/p>\n

Eyewitnesses told Radio Dabanga that three government cars chased the gunmen to prevent them from escaping. Both sides exchanged fire but security authorities bolted shortly after, sources said.  <\/p>\n

Last month, Buram town in South Darfur was overrun by gunmen mounted on horseback and camels who freed dozens of inmates after a firefight at the police station.<\/p>\n
