The African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) and humanitarian partners are said to have delivered 80,000kg of \u201ccritical aid\u201d to thousands of displaced civilians in East Darfur.<\/p>\n

An estimated 40,000 people have fled fighting between the Sudanese army (SAF) and rebel forces of SLA-Minni Minawi (SLA-MM) in the towns of Muhajeriya and Labado over the last weeks.<\/p>\n

The aid was delivered on 23 April, the mission said in a statement, adding that most of the relief consisted primarily of food rations, bottled water and medical supplies.<\/p>\n

Agencies transported the items \u201cby road under the protection of UNAMID peacekeepers\u201d, the mission disclosed. It added that a second round of delivery is \u201cin the planning stages\u201d. <\/p>\n

UN OCHA had previously reported that \u201cdespite concerted advocacy from humanitarian organizations, the government of Sudan has not allowed humanitarian organizations to have access to Muhajeriya and Labado to assess needs and provide relief, citing security concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n

For their part, however, East Darfur state authorities announced that an interagency mission would \u201csoon\u201d be allowed to travel to Yassin locality with urgent aid supplies, OCHA added.<\/p>\n

In a meeting with the Sudanese minister of interior last Thursday, the head of UNAMID urged the central government allow the access of UN humanitarian convoys to Labado and Muhajeriya. <\/p>\n

\u201cAccess remains a priority and we are pleased that this aid has made it to the people,\u201d said Chambas on 24 April. \u201cUNAMID and its UN Country Team partners will continue to ensure we reach those most in need.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cstrategically located\u201d cities of Labado and Muhajeriya have been the stage of armed dispute between SAF -supported by the Popular Defense Forces (PDF) and another armed group- and SLA-MM since the beginning of April.  <\/p>\n

Last Friday, \u201cunidentified assailants\u201d killed an UNAMID peacekeeper and injured two others at the Mission\u2019s team site in Muhajeriya.<\/p>\n
