The head of UNAMID Mohamed Ibn Chambas has recently concluded visits to the five states of Darfur to assess the security, humanitarian and political situations in the region. This is Chambas\u2019 first field trip since he assumed his post one month ago.<\/p>\n

During the period of 22 to 30 April UNAMID Joint Special Representative met with representatives of internally displaced persons, traditional leaders, state authorities and UNAMID staff in Darfur, a statement reads.<\/p>\n

In Shangil Tobay, North Darfur, Chambas met with camps\u2019 leaders to discuss matters related to their protection. \u201cThe best solution to the conflict in Darfur is to achieve a lasting peace, allowing conditions to normalize so that citizens can live without fear or intimidation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Next, UNAMID\u2019s head visited the Kalma camp for displaced in South Darfur where he reassured the population of the mission\u2019s commitment to protect civilians, as quoted in a press release. Prior to the meeting, Chambas met with South Darfur Governor Adam Mahmoud Jar Al Nabi.<\/p>\n

Chambas also met with East Darfur\u2019s Governor Abdel Hamid Musa Kasha and expressed his gratitude to the cooperation his state showed UNAMID in reference to the delivery of humanitarian aid to Labado and Muhajeriya towns, which he also visited.<\/p>\n

In Central Darfuir\u2019s Hassa Hissa and Nertiti camps, Chambas \u201clistened\u201d to concerns of displaced persons and highlighted the \u201cbenefits\u201d of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).<\/p>\n

UNAMID\u2019s chief concluded his tour in El Geneina, West Darfur, where he visited community leaders in Murnei camp. With 85,000 residents, the camp is largest in the state, the mission says. Chambas pledged the continued commitment and dedication of UNAMID to work for the protection and welfare of the displaced and the long-suffering Darfurian civilian population, it was quoted.<\/p>\n

Radio Dabanga reported that residents of Murnei camp submitted on Tuesday a list of their demands to Chambas, who \u201cpromised\u201d to implement them, they said.<\/p>\n
