A press release issued by the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) on Monday appeals to human rights groups to help save the life of Prisoner of War (POW) Adam Ibrahim Al Nur of Darfur. Al Nur is one of many who were sentenced to death by a \u2018kangaroo court\u201d following the JEM invasion of the Sudanese capital in 2008.<\/p>\n
The trial was further discredited by Al Nur\u2019s psychiatric condition: he suffers from severe depression and despite appeals from Darfur activists, Al Nur has been denied medication since his arrest.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past few weeks, Al Nur became visibly malnourished and his depression intensified. A week ago, he collapsed in his cell and was taken away on a stretcher to an unknown destination. Friends of Al Nur could not locate him in any hospital and are worried about his safety,\u201d the statement by JEM spokesman Jibril Adam Bilal says.<\/p>\n
The JEM stresses that as a POW the trial and sentencing of Al Nur contravenes international law. Moreover, the statement points out that Al Nur is covered by a presidential amnesty in accordance with a goodwill agreement signed by Khartoum and JEM in February 2009.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe agreement stipulated release of POWs held by both parties. JEM released all its POWs but Khartoum failed to comply with the Agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe appeal to all Human Rights and other relevant international organisations to act fast and ensure safety of Al Nur\u201d Bilal says. \u201cTime is running out for him and immediate intervention is necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n
On Sunday, JEM announced that security guards at the Omdurman Prison in Khartoum stormed cells occupied by JEM prisoners of war.<\/p>\n
