A UN OCHA bulletin confirms earlier Radio Dabanga reports that thousands of people have fled their homes following clashes which erupted in the beginning of May between members of the Tarjam and Fur tribes in South Darfur. The figure was provided by a national NGO.<\/p>\n

The clashes left at least 16 people dead and dozens injured in Miro on 3 May. Militants also attacked Dembo Dembo and torched several villages in the area. The next day, again confirming reports received by Radio Dabanga, 3,392 families fled the area to Kalma camp in South Darfur. In a report on Friday, UN OCHA put the number at 10,000 people.<\/p>\n

The two tribes clashed in villages such as Miro, Dembo Dembo, and Bulbul Abujazo area in El Salam locality, about 30 km southwest of Nyala, the state capital.<\/p>\n

Oxfam has estimated that approximately 1,250 newly displaced people from the area arrived in Kalma camp near Nyala and about 500 people have moved into the El Salam area of Nyala, sheltering with the host community.<\/p>\n

The report also states that some of the displaced people have slowly been persuaded to return by their tribal leaders and the Commissioner of El Salam locality. They are clustered in Gussa village in the area of Bulbul Abujazo.<\/p>\n

OCHA says negotiations for peaceful resolution of the conflict between the two tribes, brokered by the local authorities, are continuing.<\/p>\n
