The Sudanese Revolutionary Front (SRF) has called on the citizens of Khartoum to join a popular uprising to topple the ruling regime. This will avoid armed conflict in the national capital.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Radio Dabanga, Dr Jibril Ibrahim, the head of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and deputy president of the SRF said that their front-line forces would advance on Khartoum via Abu Karshola as well as several other routes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe would prefer a popular revolution to a military one,\u201d said Dr Ibrahim. \u201cIf the people of Khartoum rise-up to overthrow the regime, we will not need to resort to armed conflict in the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
In the interview, Dr Ibrahim called on all Sudanese liberation organisations to \u201cplay their part\u201d. He also made a special appeal to members of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) \u201cto stand alongside the people, rather than defend tyrants\u201d. He urged them not to defend \u201cthose thieves and looters of the peoples\u2019 property who are wanted by international justice,\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cMembers of the armed forces should stand behind the peoples\u2019 revolution until the regime has changed. It is time for the armed forces to be in the right block of history rather than the wrong one,\u201d Dr Ibrahim said.<\/p>\n
Radio Dabanga has been informed that the coordinator of government forces in Umm Rawaba in North Kordofan has distributed 1,500 firearms to civilians to encourage them to participate in the fight against the SRF. Sources say that none of the civilians were subjected to any medical examination to determine whether they are fit for military service.<\/p>\n
Concerns have been voiced that the arms could end up in the wrong hands, or might be used to settle tribal, ethnic or personal disputes. There is also the concern that some civilians have been handed weapons they don\u2019t know how to use; which constitutes a personal risk to themselves.<\/p>\n
